Wu Cheng'en ( Chinese  吳承恩  /  吴承恩 , Pinyin Wú Chéng'ēn , W.-G. Wu Ch'eng-en , age name 汝 忠 , Rǔzhōng , pseudonym 射陽 山人  /  射阳 山人 , Shèyáng Shānrén ; * um 1500 in Huai'an , Jiangsu ; † ibid around 1582, China ) was a Chinese novelist and poet of the Ming dynasty .

The novel, The Journey to the West - 西遊記 - attributed to him, about the Buddhist monk Xuanzang at the time of the Tang , who makes an adventurous pilgrimage with his three students over the mountains of the northwestern province of Xinjiang to India to bring Buddha's holy writings to China , is one of the most popular classic short stories in China , Japan and Korea . The tales and stories of the novel have been translated into German in several versions.
