Single releases

Sacrament of Wilderness

Sacrament of Wilderness was released as a split single on November 26, 1998 . Besides the song by Nightwish, the tracks "The Crow and the Warrior" by Darkwoods My Betrothed and "Burning Flames Embrace" by Eternal Tears of Sorrow are included. Sacrament of Wilderness made it to number one on the Finnish singles chart . The accompanying music video was shot on November 13, 1998.

Walking in the air

With Walking in the Air , the first “real” Nightwish single was released in 1999 (all previously released CDs were split singles). In addition to a heavily shortened version of the title track, it contains the B-side "Nightquest" and "Tutankhamen" from the previous album Angels Fall First .

Sleeping Sun (4 Ballads of the Eclipse)

Together with “Walking in the Air”, “Swanheart” and “Angels Fall First” the new track “Sleeping Sun” was first released in 1999 on an EP called Sleeping Sun - 4 Ballads of the Eclipse .

Passion and the Opera

Passion and the Opera was only released as a promotional single. In addition to a shortened version of the song, "Sacrament of Wilderness" is included.

Background information

Songs

The entire album is religiously shaped with titles like " Gethsemane ". "The Pharao Sails to Orion" begins with the Exodus verse 10:28:

“Get away from me! Take heed to thyself and see my face no more! For in the day Thou see my face Thou shalt die. "

“Get away from me and be careful that you don't come before my eyes; because on the day you come before my eyes you shall die. "

- ( Ex 10.28  EU )

On “Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean” and “The Pharao Sails to Orion”, Tapio Wilska , who has meanwhile been the singer of Finntroll , is the guest singer .

“Passion and the Opera” is musically remarkable because it uses a coloratura in the singing which is musically similar to those from Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte .

"Moondance" was the only instrumental piece until the 2007 album Dark Passion Play that has ever made it onto a Nightwish album. Guitarist Emppu Vuorinen was against recording the song, but Tuomas Holopainen finally got his way.

"Walking in the Air" is a cover version by Howard Blake .

"Sleeping Sun" is dedicated to the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999 in Central Europe. Composer Tuomas Holopainen was commissioned to write a not too long, catchy ballad for the event. The song and the accompanying music video contributed to Nightwish gaining great popularity, especially in Germany .

“Nightquest” is about the band itself: In the stanzas all band members are described (except Sami Vänskä, as he was not in the band when the song was written).

Cover

The original cover of the version published by Spinefarm is kept quite dark and shows a woman lying in the water in a wedding dress lit by the moon . An owl can also be seen holding a parchment in its claws. The motif refers to the song "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean". It's not entirely clear, however, whether this should act as the title track. If you include the Drakkar cover (see below), a reference to “Gethsemane” may even seem more obvious.

On all versions published by Drakkar Entertainment , this cover picture was replaced by a new one, which shows the same motifs but is drawn in rather light colors.

Awards

In Finland, both the album itself and all regular singles ( Sacrament of Wilderness , Walking in the Air and Sleeping Sun - 4 Ballads of the Eclipse ) achieved gold status . In Germany, Oceanborn came in 74th, Sleeping Sun in 69th.
