Dark Passion Play is the sixth studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish . The album was released in German-speaking countries on September 28, 2007 on Nuclear Blast . Spinefarm Records released the album in Finland two days earlier . It is the first album with the new singer Anette Olzon , the successor to Tarja Turunen .

The recordings for the album cost over 500,000 euros . It is the most expensive album by a Finnish band. The cost of the album was borne entirely by the band.

Emergence

Search for the new singer

Anette Olzon

After the last concert of the “Once World Tour” in Helsinki , the former singer Tarja Turunen was fired by an open letter . The expulsion generated a lot of media coverage in Finland for a few months. There was constant speculation about the name of Turunen's successor. In March 2006, the band announced that interested female singers can apply for the vacancy by demo . The band then received over 2,000 applications. Although the band was specifically looking for a new singer, three male singers also applied for the post. The band was looking for a singer who had the same vocal volume as Turunen, but a different timbre. The band didn't want a Turunen clone for the post. 50 candidates were selected from this group and received a CD with instrumental versions of various Nightwishlongs. Finally, ten candidates were invited to a face-to-face meeting.

Speculations about the identity of the new singer quickly began. Her name should be announced at the end of May 2007, just in time for the release of the first single Eva . Since the single was already on the Internet , the band preferred the release of the single and the announcement of the singer on May 24, 2007.

In an interview, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen explains that the band had already decided on Olzon in January 2007. Olzon was one of the first twenty applicants to submit a demo. With her version of the song Ever Dream (from the album Century Child ), she impressed her future bandmates. Originally, Olzon received a rejection when she told Holopainen about her four year old son.

“I immediately thought Anette was great, but internally I said goodbye to her because I thought the responsibility for a five-year-old child would put a brake on her commitment to the band. [...] But in the studio all concerns were dispelled on the first day. "

- Tuomas Holopainen

However, Olzon persisted, stated that her motherhood was not a problem and eventually got the job. In order to keep the new singer's secret, the band had always booked different hotels when they traveled together, where Olzon usually signed up under a different name. In an interview with the American online magazine About Heavy Metal, Holopainen stated that “the band with Olzon hit the jackpot ”.

Tuomas Holopainen wrote 15 songs for the new album. The fact that the band didn't have a new singer at that time was not a problem for him. When writing, he had a clear idea of how the songs should sound and had no particular voice in mind. During the songwriting Holopainen dealt with writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Walt Whitman , musically with Celtic folk .

"Despite, or perhaps because of, the whole turmoil, this time represented an incredibly creative phase for me because I didn't want to see anyone during all those months and I withdrew completely from the everyday world."

- Tuomas Holopainen in Blast! -Magazin 3/2007

The written songs were recorded as a demo in the summer of 2006 . The demo was sent to Pip Williams. He worked on the scores for the orchestra based on the demo . When arranging the orchestral parts, Williams added a few instruments that Holopainen hadn't originally intended. For the writing of the scores, Williams left his job at London's Thames Valley University for five months.

On September 15, 2006, the band went to the “Petrax” studio in Hollola without a singer to begin recording. First the drums were recorded. After that guitar , bass and keyboard were recorded in Emppu Vuorinen's home studio in Kerava . The recordings for the orchestra took place at Abbey Road Studios in London . Because of the “legend factor”, the recordings took place in Studio 2, where the Beatles and Pink Floyd have already worked. The orchestral recordings took eight days and were carried out in two stages in December 2006 and February 2007. The vocals of Anette Olzon and Marco Hietala were recorded in March 2007 in the "Petrax" studio.

As with its predecessor, the band worked with the London Philharmonic Orchestra . About 80% of the orchestra members were already on the previous album Once . Instead, the choir , which, like its predecessor, comes from "Metro Voices", is a few members stronger than on the last album. A total of 130 musicians were involved in the recordings. The album was produced by Tuomas Holopainen , assisted by Tero Kinnunen and Mikko Karmila. The mixing of the album took 75 days to complete and was Mikko Karmila in Finnvox Studios in Helsinki adopted. The album was mastered by Mika Jussila at Finnvox Studios.

Faster Harder Nightwish

On April 1st 2007 it was announced that the new album would be called Faster Harder Nightwish . The title refers to the Scooter single Faster Harder Scooter , which was released in 1999 from their album Back to the Heavyweight Jam . At the same time the "cover" of the new album was published. Only a few hours later, a “promosampler” was circulating in various Internet exchange sites. However, the whole action turned out to be an April Fool's joke .

Music videos

Hugo Simberg: The wounded angel , 1903

Three music videos have been produced so far. The video clips for Amaranth and Bye Bye Beautiful were shot in Los Angeles . The cost of recording both videos was around 270,000 euros. To save costs, both videos were shot one after the other. The director was Antti Jokinen, who has also shot video clips for Beyoncé , Korn and Céline Dion . For Nightwish he shot the video clip for the song Nemo . The Amaranth video was first broadcast on MTV Finland on August 11, 2007 . The music videos were produced by John Thorpe.

The video clip for Amaranth tells a story based on the painting The Wounded Angel by the Finnish painter Hugo Simberg . It is about two people who catch fish on a small river. Suddenly someone discovers a fallen and injured angel on the riverbank . The two decide to take the angel home on a makeshift stretcher . They cross their hometown, where they meet with amazement among the population. When they get home, they take care of the angel while an angry mob approaches the house from outside. One of the attackers storms into the house and takes the two men out of the house, while the other people set the house on fire. The angel wakes up and at the last moment can flee through the roof.

The music video for Bye Bye Beautiful is a "performance video "; H. you can see the band playing the song in front of a backdrop. For the video, four actresses were hired to act as doubles for the four male band members. During the verses, Anette Olzon sings the song accompanied by the actresses, while the correct band line-up can be seen during the choruses .

In early October 2007, the band recorded a third music video in the city of Rovaniemi . A third music video was not actually planned. The band was contacted by the city and received an offer for, according to Holopainen, "a perfect location that combines the Lappish wilderness with the surrealism of Salvador Dalí ". The title of the song is The Islander . It first aired on MTV Finland on April 14, 2008. The song was also the next single. The video was directed by Stobe Harju, the video was produced by Ilkka Immonen.

Showing up on the internet

On May 24, 2007, the first single Eva appeared on a UK download site. For this reason, the release of the single and the announcement of the new singer were brought forward. In June more songs were distributed, albeit of poor quality, through sites like YouTube and some torrent sites. Over the next few weeks, high-quality recordings from promo CDs began to appear . These promo CDs contain so-called “voiceovers”, in which a voice says at irregular intervals that the listener is listening to the new Nightwish album Dark Passion Play and which song is currently playing.

background

The title of the album

Originally the album should be called "The Poet and the Pendulum". It wasn't until late that Holopainen thought of Dark Passion Play . Holopainen thinks the title is terrific because everyone can interpret the title however they want. You can read the title as “Dark Passion Play ” or “ Dark Passion Play”, which according to Holopainen makes a big difference. With one emphasis, the title can be translated as "dark passion play ", with the other as "game of dark passion" (Eng. Passion = passion).

“I don't want to go into too much detail about titles or individual lyrics, but" Dark Passion Play "expresses to me everything that Nightwish stand for, especially on this album. It's dark, it's soulful, it's like a big, orchestral theater. The three words simply express everything that distinguishes us as a band. "

- Tuomas Holopainen

The cover

The cover artwork was designed by Janne and Gina Pitkänen. It shows a pendulum hanging over a stormy ocean at night. The circular center of the pendulum covers the moon, whose light shines through the gap between the inner and outer parts of the pendulum. The cover is a clear reference to the first song on the album, "The Poet And The Pendulum", which was originally intended to be the namesake for the entire work. The two components of the song are symbolized on the one hand by flying music sheets ("The Poet") and by the centrally arranged crescent-shaped pendulum ("The Pendulum") that dominates the image structure. The visualization of the said song in the form of the album cover was retained even after Holopainen's decision to change the album title to "Dark Passion Play". There was no restructuring of the optical layout.

music

According to Tuomas Holopainen, there are no big differences in style between Once and Dark Passion Play . The biggest difference to the previous album is the female vocals. Dark Passion Play is atmospherically the darkest Nightwish album. The musical extremes are also greater than ever before. The songs are either calm ballads or heavy metal songs. Holopainen described the album in an interview as the heaviest album the band has ever made.

“A lot of negative energies influenced me in songwriting and especially in writing the lyrics. […] The artist's music inevitably reflects his current life situation and the year 2005 was a tough test for me in many ways, hence the dark mood of the album. "

- Tuomas Holopainen, EMP magazine, autumn 2007

For the first time in two Nightwish songs, the music was not completely written by Tuomas Holopainen. The music for Whoever Brings the Night is by Emppu Vuorinen. Holopainen only wrote the lyrics and the vocal line here. The Islander was written by Marco Hietala. Hietala takes over the main part of the vocals on this song and on Master Passion Greed . These are the first songs in the band's history in which the singer is not in the foreground.

The Last of the Wilds is the first instrumental since Moondance from the album Oceanborn . The song is a mixture of Finnish melodies and Irish sounds. Irish instruments such as the uilleann pipes and the tin whistle (played by Troy Donockley ) as well as the Finnish national instrument kantele , played by Senni Eskelinen are used.

The Poet and the Pendulum is a very personal song for Tuomas Holopainen. In an interview, he stated that this song defines what the album is about. It's the soundtrack to his life. The title of the song was inspired by the short story The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe . At the end of the song Holopainen is split in two by the pendulum. For him this has a therapeutic meaning. Due to the length of the song of almost 14 minutes, he had long thought about where this song should appear on the album. Since Meadows of Heaven was already firmly planned for the last position, Holopainen decided to put The Poet and the Pendulum in the first place. Parts of the text were originally intended to be performed by two twelve-year-old singers. However, the head of the Metro Voices choir had concerns and asked Holopainen to defuse some of the proposed text passages. Holopainen saw this and decided that the corresponding passage should be sung by Marco Hietala. When Holopainen started working on this song, he had the plot of the song in mind and designed a lyrical concept that was divided into five parts. Then the music was worked out for it. The result was originally over 20 minutes long and was eventually shortened.

According to Tuomas Holopainen, the song Bye Bye Beautiful is a farewell song for the former singer Tarja Turunen . Despite the aggressive orientation of the song, it is not a hate song, but rather deals with the question of why this separation could even come about. Since the new singer Anette Olzon was an outsider regarding the separation from Turunen, certain parts of the text are sung by Marco Hietala. Tuomas Holopainen said in an interview that he hopes to be friends with the former singer again one day. According to Holopainen, the song is related to Wish I Had an Angel from the previous album Once .

The title of the song Amaranth refers to the plant of the same name , which, according to Holopainen, stands for perfection and everlasting goodness and beauty.

Master Passion Greed is dedicated to Tarja Turunen's husband and manager Marcelo Cabuli. According to Holopainen, it is the hardest song in the band's history. When he wrote the song, he brought all of the anger the band had experienced over the split with Turunen to the music. Originally Olzon was supposed to sing the song. After the band discussed the song and the lyrics, Hietala interjected that it would be unfair for Olzon to sing the song as an innocent person. That is why Hietala's voice can be heard in this song. Holopainen has already announced that the song will not be played at concerts because his feelings today no longer match the text. According to Holopainen, the song has a clear influence from the band Children of Bodom . The song was composed entirely on guitar by Holopainen .

Eva is about a little girl who is teased at school. In an interview, Holopainen stated that Anette Olzon was in a similar situation in her childhood and therefore "can bring the story behind the song to life".

Sahara is based on a dream by Tuomas Holopainen.

Whoever Brings the Night was written by Emppu Vuorinen. It's a song about love , sex , death and irony . Olzon described the song in an interview as " The Grudge meets Tim Burton with mean lyrics".

For the Heart I Once Had is about lost childhood.

The Islander is about a lonely lighthouse keeper . The song was originally written by Marco Hietala for his band Tarot , but was never used. Hietala played the song to Holopainen on an acoustic guitar . Holopainen explained that the two songs Hietala sang "are one more reason not to touch a microphone again".

The chorus for 7 Days to the Wolves was inspired by the American poet Walt Whitman .

The final song Meadows of Heaven is about Tuomas Holopainen's childhood.

Statistical

Dark Passion Play sets several new records for the band. It's the album with the most songs, it's the album with the longest playing time, and The Poet and the Pendulum is the longest song in the band's history. The time gap between Once and Dark Passion Play is also a new record of over three years. In addition, according to Holopainen, Master Passion Greed is on the one hand the hardest piece and on the other hand Eva one of the gentlest pieces on the album.

While Your Lips Are Still Red was created by Tuomas Holopainen as the theme music for the Finnish film Lieksa! written. The instrumentation of the song makes it unusual for the band, as you only hear Marco Hietala (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) and Jukka Nevalainen (drums) on this song. While Your Lips Are Still Red is released as the B-side of the Amaranth single.

Reviews

Like its predecessor Once, Dark Passion Play was named "Album of the Month" by the German Metal Hammer . In his review , Christian Hector wrote: “In the end, the four remaining Nightwish members did brilliantly both to replace an extraordinary singer like Tarja Turunen and to write another album that will (hopefully) bring the Finns even further . ”The online magazine Metal.de describes Dark Passion Play as a“ masterpiece combining hardness, bombast and emotion ”. According to Stefan Popp from metal1.info, the album “looks like a mighty soundtrack over long periods ”. The length of the album was rated negatively in some cases. Keith Bergman of the online magazine Blabbermouth wrote in his review that some songs - especially from the second half of the album - should have been better used as B-sides .

Sales figures and chart positions

On the first day of sales in Finland , the album sold 42,000 times and immediately achieved platinum status . After two days, 60,000 units had already been sold in Finland, for which there was double platinum. On October 24, 2007, 90,000 units had already been sold.

The album entered the album charts at number 1 in Germany , Finland, Croatia , Switzerland , the Czech Republic and Hungary . There were also places in the top 10 in Sweden (4th place), Greece , the Netherlands and Austria (5th place each) and Norway (7th place). In the first week of sales, the album was awarded a gold record in Germany, Austria, Poland and Switzerland . On October 29, 2007 the album received gold in Sweden for 30,000 units sold.

In an interview with the Canadian online magazine ChartAttack.com, Tuomas Holopainen explained why he thinks his band is so successful:

“Our music is very diverse. There is really hard stuff, there are also a lot of ballads and the mixture of orchestra and guitars. So we offer something for everyone. Our success is based on the honesty of the music. We never followed any trends. We always did our own thing. People have an inner feeling and quickly discover what is real and what is not. Even if we are a childishly naive band, there is a lot of honesty involved and that's why so many people like us. "

Awards

At the Emma Gaala on March 8, 2008, Dark Passion Play was awarded the Emma , the Finnish equivalent of the Grammy Award , in the categories "Best Metal Album" and "Best Album" . The song Amaranth received a nomination in the category "Song of the Year". In addition, the band was awarded the Emma in the “Band of the Year” category, and Lauri Tähkä & Elonkerjuu won the nomination for “Best Finnish Artist” . At the German music award Echo , the band was awarded in the category "Rock / Alternative International".

At the “Swedish Metal Awards”, Dark Passion Play received an award in the “International Hard Rock” category.

tour

Before the start of the tour, the band played a secret concert in the Estonian capital Tallinn on September 22, 2007 . Nightwish appeared under the name "Nachtwasser" and claimed to be a Nightwish cover band . On September 26th and 28th, two more concerts followed in Helsinki and Hamburg , which were also originally announced as appearances by cover bands. Even in the run-up to these concerts, rumors were circulating that the real band was hiding behind the cover bands.

The tour for the album began on October 6, 2007 in Tel Aviv . It was the first Nightwish concert on Israeli soil. A 23-concert tour through North America followed between October 15 and November 17, 2007 . Of these concerts, two took place in Canada , the rest in the USA . Nightwish was accompanied by the British band Paradise Lost as a support band. There are two reasons why the tour begins in North America, a relatively small market for the band, according to Holopainen. On the one hand, the band can warm up there for the big stages in Europe. Second, the band had to cancel two concerts in North America during the “Once” tour. At the concerts in San Antonio and Dallas , John Two-Hawks, who appeared as a guest musician on the previous album Once , appeared with the band.

This was followed by a tour of Scandinavia , which ended on January 1, 2008 in Helsinki . During this section Nightwish were accompanied by the Finnish band Indica . After a short break, five concerts in Australia were planned for the end of January / beginning of February 2008 . A European tour followed between February and April 2008 with eight concerts in Germany and one concert each in Austria and Switzerland. The opening act were the Swedish band Pain and the German band Krieger . From May 2008 further concerts followed in North America, where Nightwish were accompanied by the Swedish band Sonic Syndicate .

The tour for the album Dark Passion Play was the longest in the band's history with a length of about two years. The tour ended on September 19, 2009.

In an interview, Holopainen explained that Anette Olzon completely reinterpreted the songs originally sung by Tarja Turunen during the rehearsals and did not even try to work with an operatic voice. This would make the old songs sound different. Previously, rumors kept surfacing that Olzon could not sing the band's old songs.

The income generated in Finland went to the children's homes Viliina and Tiasen Pesä , otherwise the income went to the German project Die Arche . During the secret concert in Hamburg on September 28, 2007, the organization Die Arche was presented with a check for 10,000 euros .

Even if the single was not released on CD or vinyl , a cover was designed. The picture shows a young girl in typical Finnish clothing from the 19th century . 49. Did Nightwish steal new single? (No longer available online.) Archived from the original on September 27, 2007 ; Retrieved July 12, 2010 (English): "According to Finland's MTV3, the new NIGHTWISH single" Eva "is currently under investigation by Teosto, the Finnish RIAA equivalent whose task it is to promote the rights of composers, lyricists, arrangers and music publishers, and to strengthen the diversity of Finnish composition. The chorus of the song is allegedly very similar to a track called "Whirlpool" by Jukka Reinivuo, a relatively unknown Finnish artist. In fact, the similarities are so great that allegations of plagiarism have already been thrown around. "
