Hugo Simberg
Hugo Gerhard Simberg (born June 24, 1873 in Hamina ; † July 12, 1917 in Ähtäri , Finland ) was a Finnish painter and graphic artist of symbolism .
life and work
Although he was supported by the recognized Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela , his pictures were considered to be out of date and strange. Simberg mainly painted pictures of death, suffering and demonic figures, as they are strongly present in Finnish folklore. However, he always saw a humorous or ironic aspect of these issues. Of outstanding importance is his fresco In the Garden of Death , which is located in Tampere Cathedral . This work is a conversion of the fairy tale The Story of a Mother by Hans Christian Andersen .
One of his most famous works is the picture The Wounded Angel , which he painted in 1903. The original is in the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki. Simberg also painted a larger version of the same painting for Tampere Cathedral .
