The Cathedral of Tampere ( Finnish: Tampereen tuomiokirkko ) is the cathedral of the diocese of Tampere of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and an important building of Finnish national romanticism.

On September 3, 1897, the church council, headed by Pastor Karl Fontell, decided to build a new church on the eastern edge of the center, in the Kyttälä district, north of the train station. The reason for this was the growing population. In November 1899 the competition for architects in the country was announced. The winner of this competition was Lars Sonck with his contribution "Aeternitas".

His design, a blue-gray granite building in the style of Finnish national romanticism , was built between 1902 and 1907 and consecrated as St. John's Church on May 19, 1907 , and became Tampere Cathedral in 1923 when the bishop's seat was moved from Porvoo to Tampere.

Furnishing

The pulpit is to the left of the altar. It was built so that it can be seen anywhere in the church. The Lord's Supper was designed by Eric OW Ehrström and is decorated with Christian ornaments and scenes of the Passion of Christ.

painting

When the Diocese of Tampere was formed in 1923, St. John's Church was designated as a cathedral.

On the recommendation of the painter Albert Edelfelt , Magnus Enckell and Hugo Simberg were commissioned to paint the church. Enckell created the monumental altar painting Resurrection . The picture shows people, mostly in white robes: women with children, men and couples. The other wall and glass paintings are by Simberg, as is the oil painting The Wounded Angel in the gallery and the fresco In the Garden of Death in the left aisle.

On the ceiling of the main aisle you can see the snake from paradise, which holds the apple from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in its mouth. The symbolism of his pictures and the fact that he was painting a winged snake on a red background at the highest point of the vault led to heated arguments since the church was inaugurated as to whether this art was appropriate for church use. Today, Simberg's and Enckell's paintings are among the masterpieces of Finnish symbolism. For the stained glass windows, Hugo Simberg took Bible passages as a model, so one recognizes the Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove, the burning bush, which is mentioned in the second book of Moses, as well as the white and red rider , which is shown in the Revelation of John to be named.

use

Tampere Cathedral is not only used for church services, but also for musical events (organ concerts, choir and oratorio performances) and plays.
