history

The Diocese of Tampere was founded in 1554 by the Swedish King Gustav I. Wasa as the Diocese of Viipuri . It was the second diocese in Finland after the diocese of Turku . After the Great Northern War , Sweden had to cede to Russia in the Peace of Nystad Viipuri in 1721 , which is why the bishopric was moved to Porvoo (Swedish Borgå ) two years later . In 1923 the new diocese Borgå was founded in Porvoo , which looks after all Swedish-speaking believers in Finland. At the same time the old diocese of Porvoo was converted into the diocese of Tampere.
