Diocese of Oulu

The diocese of Oulu ( Finnish Oulun hiippakunta ) is one of nine dioceses in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland . The diocese is the northernmost of Finland and its bishop has been Samuel Salmi since 2001 .

The diocese was founded in 1851 as the diocese of Kuopio. In 1900 the bishopric was moved from Kuopio to Oulu , but the name was not changed to "Diocese of Oulu" until 1923. The diocese of Oulu covers most of the northern Ostrobothnian landscape and the Lapland landscape . The bishopric is the Oulu Cathedral .
