Samuel Salmi (born March 19, 1951 in Muonio ) was Bishop of the Oulu Diocese in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland from 2001 to 2018 .

Life

Samuel Sami was born in Munio in the Finnish part of Lapland and graduated from school in 1970 in Pello , a community a little further south, also in Lapland. He then studied Protestant theology in Helsinki until 1974 and then went seamlessly into training as a pastor. After he had been ordained in the meantime , he obtained his doctorate theologiae in 1990 . The positions that Salmi filled in his professional career include: a. the office of general secretary of the Archdiocese of Turku (1987-1993) and the office of pastor of the Church of St. Catherine (1993-2000), before he was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Oulu in 2001. In addition, he has been heavily involved in various forms of committee work since the mid-1980s.

In addition, he worked twice as a book author and published in 2002 ("Sprich, Norden, Sprich", Finnish : Puhu, pohjoinen, puhu ) and 2008 ("Listen to the voice of the North", Finnish : Kuule pohjoista puhetta ) his own books, the deal with the local culture as well as the intellectual and social life in the northern mountains and river valleys.

Sociopolitical stance

In the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 onwards , he positioned himself in the third quarter of 2016 against Pavi Nerg, State Secretary in the Finnish Ministry of the Interior. While she pointed out that asylum seekers without identity papers should not be helped, Salmi stressed that the church itself decides how to deal with people without papers.

In doing so, he remained true to a line that he had already taken three years earlier in the context of an ecumenical service on Independence Day: the reality of society is multiculturalism and diversity, he said in his sermon. He also pointed out that a new vision was necessary and that there was no longer a single culture ( Finnish Tarvitaan uusi visio. Yhtenäiskulttuuria ei enää ole. ).

family

Samuel Salmi is married to the economist Hannele Salmi (née Zeitlinger), who works as a diocesan assistant in the cathedral of Oulu. They have two children together, Mikko Salmi (* 1975, also pastor) and Johanna Forss-Lähdesmäki (* 1982), and six grandchildren.
