Per Oskar Kjølaas (born May 25, 1948 in Kirkenes ) was Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Norway in the diocese of North Hålogaland ( Troms and Finnmark ) from 2002 to 2014 .

Life

After finishing school, Kjølaas studied Sami languages at the University of Oslo and theology at the Theological College ( Menighetsfakultetet ). He finished his studies in 1974. Afterwards Kjølaas worked as a pastor in Northern Norway, including Sortland , Kautokeino and Karasjok .

Kjølaas has authored several theological books. He also translated Luther's Small Catechism into North Sami . With Nils Jernsletten and Britt Rajala he translated the New Testament into North Sami (1998). In 2002 he became head of a project group that aims to have a Sami re-translation of the Bible by 2019. The Bible Societies in Norway, Sweden and Finland are involved.
