description

The nature reserve is located in Holstein Switzerland, surrounded by a hilly moraine landscape , in a sand area . It covers about 270 hectares and includes the Suhrer See , the Großer Madebrökensee and the Kleiner Ukleisee with their riverside areas. Only small parts of the area are used for agriculture. The bank areas form moist swamp forests with an alder , willow and ash population . On the south-west bank of the Suhrer See there is a small moor forest , which is native to peat moss , cottongrass and whistle grass . High water levels and nutrient-poor soil are typical for these biotopes, the Suhrer See is also very nutrient-poor, and the severely endangered Schneidried occurs on some of the banks .

Emergence

Between the terminal moraines formed by advances by glacier tongues , nutrient-poor gravel and sand areas formed as a result of the melting, in which the debris transported by the ice collected. The remaining nutrients were removed by the meltwater. Nutrient-poor lakes formed in the depressions, agriculture played no major role on the sterile subsoil in the past. Due to these circumstances, the Suhrer See was able to maintain its great biodiversity in the clear water.

Protection and care measures

The atypical proportion of coniferous wood in the forests has been reduced and the input of nutrients from the surrounding area is to be reduced. An otter passage was built under the federal highway 76 in the south and the banks in the area of the Stadtheide were renatured. There is no longer any use of the forest by forestry. To protect the waterfowl, water sports are not permitted in the area. A good network of paths with several viewpoints has been created in the nature reserve, and there are some swimming areas.
