The Kossautal is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein town of Lütjenburg and the communities of Hohwacht (Baltic Sea) , Helmstorf , Klamp , Giekau and Rantzau in the Plön district .

The 97  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 115 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled at the end of 1984 (date of regulation: December 31, 1984). The nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Kossautal and adjacent areas" and the EU bird protection area "NSG Kossautal". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön.

The nature reserve is located east of Kiel . It puts the Kossau with its valley between the federal highway 430 at Gut Rantzau to the federal highway 202 in Lütjenburg and two other areas in the east and northeast of Lütjenburg under protection. A small part of the nature reserve lies within the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park . The Kossau runs largely close to nature through its only 100 to 200 meter wide, incised valley, which is a former meltwater channel of an ice tongue from the Vistula glaciation . In its meandering course, the Kossau forms impact and sliding slopes as well as edges . It is predominantly accompanied by wet meadows , reed beds and herbaceous vegetation as well as broken forests , willow bushes and small-scale alluvial forests .

The nature reserve has a special meaning for different birds . So are in the nature reserve z. B. Schlagschwirl , goosander , kingfisher , gray wagtail and marsh harrier native.

The nature reserve is looked after by the Plön District Sport Fishing Association.
