The Mönkeberger See is a lake and nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Mönkeberg in the Plön district and the city of Kiel .

Nature reserve

The 49.83 hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 192 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was declared at the end of 2007 (date of regulation: December 17, 2007). Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the Plön district and the city of Kiel.

The nature reserve is located in the north of Kiel east of the Kiel Fjord between the district of Diedrichsdorf and Mönkeberg. It places the Mönkeberger See and the areas surrounding it in a depression in a young moraine landscape under protection. Most of the lake is silted up . He is by extensive reed zones and willow surrounded and moist thickets. Furthermore, grassland , grass and herb vegetation , Seggenrieder and forest areas in the nature reserve to find, including a small black alder - common oak forest in the northwest. In the southwest there is a richly structured orchid meadow that is mowed regularly.

The lake is around 3.1 hectares in size. Its shore length is about 1.45 kilometers. Parts of the lake have been drained in the past to use the land as pasture . The water of the lake flows over the partially piped Aalbek. After a pipe at the lake blocked in 1977, the lake built up again. The water level of the lake has been regulated by a weir since 1980 .

To the west of the lake are numerous small ponds surrounded by willows in the nature reserve. The ponds are bomb craters from the Second World War that have been filled with water.

In the northeast, the former Königsmoor is included in the nature reserve. From 1760 peat was mined here , initially using manual peat digging, and after the First World War also mechanically. In 1933 the moor was drained and cultivated into meadows . After the Second World War, peat was dug again due to the lack of fuel.

The nature reserve is a habitat for numerous plants and animals. So come here u. a. Equisetum fluviatile , Carex paniculata , gray and sallow , sand reed grass , marsh orchid , marsh orchid , Hirsesegge and Galium palustre ago. On the orchid meadow in the southwest of the protected area, u. a. Orchid orchids, quaking grass , stiff-haired dandelions and purgers . The lake is u. a. Habitat of gray and Canada goose , heron , haddock and teal , gray heron and kingfisher , the reed zones offer u. a. the bittern a suitable habitat. Furthermore come z. B. Skylark , Beutelmeise , backed Shrike , wheatear , Reed Warbler , Spotted Woodpecker , Common Snipe and Raven in the nature reserve before. The Mönkeberger lake and the ponds in the west of the protected area are amphibians habitat, including toad , grass and edible frog and newt . In a pond also is crested newt to be found. The waters are also the habitat of various dragonflies , including Little Hawker , Common somatochlora , Great King dragonfly and Common winter damsel .

The nature reserve, which is managed by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the German Nature Conservation Union , borders in many cases on settlement areas, but also on allotment gardens and agricultural areas . An old railway embankment runs to the west of the reserve, which is now partially used as a hiking trail . Another hiking trail runs in the north of the protected area.
