Dannauer See and the surrounding area is the name of a 40 hectare nature reserve in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park . Only the southern area is in the area of the community of Dannau , the larger part including the lake belongs to the community of Rantzau .
The shallow, eutrophic lake has extensive silting zones and is surrounded by reed beds, wooded knolls and extensively used grassland. The nature reserve is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 .
The special features of the nature reserve include extensive woodruff beech forests and moist tall herbaceous corridors. The open water is covered by fields of lake and pond rose in summer. There are spawning herbs below . The particular species of the reserve include fire-bellied toad , tree frog, moor frog , great crested newt and marsh harrier . There are also golden gray ducks and great crested grebes . The swamp warbler and sprout are at home in the extensive reed beds . Also, Kingfisher and whinchat can be observed here. Occasionally the white-tailed eagle hunts over the water.
