The old arm of the Schwentine is a section of the Schwentine between Raisdorf and Klausdorf that was designated as a nature reserve in 1984 . It received this protection status because the stretch of water has remained close to nature due to its steep bank slopes and is a habitat for a number of rare plants and animals. The Schwentine valley, in which the nature reserve is located, was created by a chain of dead ice fields that remained after the last ice age. After thawing, a chain of dammed lakes was created and, after breakthroughs, today's river valley of the Schwentine.
