The northern part of Lake Selenter and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Fargau-Pratjau , Köhn , and Giekau in the Plön district .

The approximately 705  hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 93 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1978 (date of regulation: November 15, 1978). The nature reserve is largely part of the FFH area "Selenter See" and the EU bird sanctuary "Selenter See area". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön.

The nature reserve is located east of Kiel on the north and east banks of Lake Selenter between Pratjau, Giekau and Klamp . It protects the bay-rich shore of the lake, the adjacent areas and the water areas in front of the bays within a line running somewhat between Pratjau and Klamp. The bay near Pülsen is partially excluded from the protected area. There is a swimming area here.

The river banks and shallow water zones with their Verlandungs be zones of reeds and swamp forests taken. This is followed in places by deciduous and coniferous forests and isolated grassland . The bank areas form one of the largest contiguous and largely naturally preserved lakeshore landscapes in Schleswig-Holstein.

The nature reserve is of international importance as a breeding , moulting and wintering area for numerous water birds , including gadfly , spoonbill , tufted pochard and pochard . In addition to these and other ducks, there are great crested grebes and goosander . The reed areas offer u. a. Reed bunting , various reeds , bittern and marsh harrier a habitat. The swamp forests have a high proportion of dead wood and offer nesting opportunities for cave breeders such as the small woodpecker , pied flycatcher and willow tit .

The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association. At Giekau there is a viewing platform from which the Giekau Bay can be seen. Driving on the water areas within the nature reserve is prohibited.
