The Barsbeker See and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Barsbek and Wendtorf in the Plön district .

The approximately 146  hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 116 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1982 (date of regulation: September 14, 1982). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön. The nature reserve is to a large extent from the conservation area surrounded "Probsteier salt marshes and the surrounding area".

The nature reserve is located northeast of Kiel in the provost's office . It puts the Barsbeker See , a former bay of the Baltic Sea , as well as the surrounding lowlands and silting zones under protection. The nature reserve has been separated from the Baltic Sea by a dike since the early 1880s . Since then, the previously regular floods from the Baltic Sea have stopped, and the brackish lake and the surrounding area have become increasingly sweet.

The shores of the slowly silting Lake Barsbeker See and the adjacent areas are characterized by extensive reed beds with large reeds and tall herbaceous areas. Alder and willow bushes falter in places. Especially north of the lake, grassland areas of different degrees of moisture adjoin the reed zones . Various orchids live here , including broad-leaved orchids and flesh-colored orchids . The latter has its largest known occurrence in Schleswig-Holstein. In some places there is still salt-influenced grassland.

In the lake live pike , roach , bream , tench , rudd , perch , moderlieschen , silver bream , gables and dwarf stickleback . It is also a habitat for crayfish and large mussels such as the pond mussel . The two invasive species of crayfish and Chinese gloved hand crab can also be found here. The nature reserve is the habitat for Marsh Harriers , Bearded Tit , Swirls , Black Warblers and Scots . Also skylark , meadow pipit and wagtail are native. However , the area has largely lost its former function as a breeding and resting area for meadow and wading birds due to lower water levels. During the bird migration , the nature reserve serves as a resting area and a. for lapwing , golden plover , fire , river and Arctic tern and short-eared owl and various small birds. The white-tailed eagle uses the area for foraging. Dragonflies are z. B. represented by the blue-green damsel and the blood-red darter . The brown forest bird can also be found. Amphibians are z. B. represented by moor frog and common toad .

The grassland areas in the nature reserve are mowed for maintenance and, like the dikes, cattle and sheep are grazed with. The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Hunting Association. It borders to the northwest on the dike to the Baltic Sea and to the east on the former Barsbeker dike. Hiking trails run across the dikes and along the southern border of the nature reserve. Information boards can be found in several places. The nature reserve is almost completely surrounded by agricultural land .
