The Sehlendorfer inland lake and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Blekendorf in the Plön district .

The 230  hectare nature reserve is entered with the number 108 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of the State of Schleswig-Holstein . It was designated at the end of 1989 (date of regulation: December 22, 1989) and replaces the nature reserve of the same name designated in May 1980 (date of regulation: May 23, 1980). The nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Strandseen der Hohwachter Bucht" and the EU bird sanctuary "Eastern Bay of Kiel". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön.

The nature reserve is located east of Kiel between the seaside resorts of Sehlendorf and Hohwacht on the Hohwacht Bay . It puts the Sehlendorfer inland lake and its surroundings under protection. The nature reserve borders in the west and south on the landscape protection area "Coastal and moraine landscape in the area of ​​the communities Hohwacht and Blekendorf up to the border". The Sehlendorfer See is a beach lake that is connected to the Baltic Sea via the Broeck, a small watercourse . The Sehlendorfer Binnensee is the only beach lake on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast that is not regulated in its exchange with the Baltic Sea. In the nature reserve are the Fulensee northwest lying, the salt marshes and riparian grassland areas and other agricultural areas included. To the Baltic Sea, parts of the beach wall , the dunes and the beach as well as a 100 meter wide, shallow water area of ​​the Baltic Sea close to the beach are included in the nature reserve. Salt marshes and grassland areas are extensively grazed with Scottish highland cattle for care .

The nature reserve is characterized by the beach lake and mostly moist lowlands . When the water level in the Baltic Sea is high, salty Baltic Sea water penetrates into the lake via the Broeck. Several times a year the lowland area is flooded by ingress of water from the Baltic Sea. The shore areas of the lake are partially of brackish water reeds having salt-resistant plants such as reeds , Ordinary beach ledges and salt Teichbinse ingested. In addition, come Archangel Wurz and marsh sow thistle before. In much of the lowland area prevail salt marshes with samphire , Bodden rush , milkweed , beach plantain , beach trident , beach Aster and adder's tongue before. On the beach wall between the Baltic Sea and Strandsee, a dry grassland with silver grass , sand sedge , hot stonecrop and other typical plants has developed. The common marshmallow, which is rare in Schleswig-Holstein, is also found in the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is the habitat of numerous birds, including redshank , oystercatchers , ringed plover , goosander , little tern and common tern . The reed areas offer u. a. Reed bunting and reed warbler a suitable habitat. At the same time, the area is of great importance for resting and wintering birds, including lapwing , avocets , greenshank , dark water strider , dunlin , golden plover , eider and long-tailed duck , various geese and whooper swans . Also natterjack toad and green toad are native in the nature reserve.

In the area of ​​the beach wall, a hiking trail runs through the nature reserve, on which there is a viewing platform and an observation platform . There are several information boards for visitors along the way. The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany .

To the north of the Broek there was a 6-hectare campsite that was dismantled at the beginning of 2007 and the site was renatured.
