The small inland lake and adjacent salt marshes is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein community of Behrensdorf in the Plön district .

The approximately 255 hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 53 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitization. It was originally designated as a nature reserve of almost 106 hectares in 1957 (date of regulation: February 25, 1957) and expanded to its present size in 2015. The nature reserve is part of the FFH area “Strandseen der Howachter Bucht” and the EU bird sanctuary “Eastern Bay of Kiel”. It borders on the landscape protection area "Baltic Sea coast in the area of the communities Behrensdorf and Hohwacht, the Great Inland Lake, the lower reaches of the Kossau and the surrounding area". Parts of the landscape protection area merged with the enlargement of the nature protection area. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön.

The nature reserve is located east of Kiel on the Hohwacht Bay . It comprises the approximately 25 hectare large and on average about 0.5 meters deep Small Inland Lake up to its southwestern bank, the salt marshes between the new and old inland dyke and the salt marshes, salt and marsh meadows in the dike foreland adjoining the Small Inland Lake to the south and the upstream beach section with beach, rampart and dunes and about 500 meters wide the area of the Baltic Sea upstream of the coastline. In the past, salt water ingress from the Baltic Sea often occurred at the Kleiner Binnensee . The salt marsh areas were also flooded. In 1964 the lake was diked into the Baltic Sea. Since then there have been no inrushes of salt water, which means that the small inland lake is sweetened. Most of the characteristic plants of the salt marshes can only be found in front of the dike. On the areas behind the dike grow z. B. Fir fronds , salt fescue , brine and common adder tongue .

The beach and dune areas are occupied by salt-resistant and salt-loving plants. Chickweed , stonecrop , sea thistle and sea kale grow on the scree beach above the sandy beach. On the inland subsequent White dunes grow beach grass and beach rye on gray dunes fireweed , thrift and wild pansy .

Brackish water can be found in the salt marshes and bank areas of the Strandsee . The salt marshes are extensively grazed with Scottish highland cattle to prevent the reed from spreading . In the late summer of 2010, the salt marshes in the south of the nature reserve were more waterlogged. For this purpose, drainage ditches were closed and creek structures were reconnected to the Little Inland Lake. The salt marshes are the habitat of various wading birds such as lapwing , oystercatcher , avocet , snipe and redshank . Gravel areas with little vegetation serve as breeding grounds for the little tern and ringed plover. There are also ducks and rails . The reserve also has a feeding, roosting and moulting area for swans , geese , ducks and waders national importance.

The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany . A hiking trail , the Strandweg, runs between the dike and the beach wall through the nature reserve, which is also used as a local recreation area. Ten wooden crossings lead from it to the beach.
