The peninsulas and bays in Lanker See are a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Kühren and Wahlstorf and the small town of Preetz in the Plön district .

The approximately 207  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 29 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled at the beginning of 1995 (date of regulation: January 17, 1995). The 22-hectare nature reserve "Peninsula and the Bay in Lanker See", which was designated in 1938, was incorporated into it. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Plön. The nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Lanker See and Kührener Teich" and the EU bird sanctuary "Lanker See". It is largely from the conservation area "Lankans lake and Schwentine to Oberbayerische See u. Surroundings ”. In the south-west, beyond the embankment of the Kiel – Lübeck railway line, the nature reserve “ Kührener Teich und Umgebung ” adjoins. Both nature reserves form a biotope network with national importance as breeding, resting and feeding areas for numerous birds. The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany .

The nature reserve is located south of Preetz. It includes the bays and peninsulas (Appelwarder, Kührener peninsula and Bullenwarder) in the west of the Lanker See as well as the adjacent bank areas and the areas between the Lanker See outdoor pool in the north, the embankment in the west with the exception of the Charlottenwerk location near the former Kühren train station and the outlet of the Kührener pond in the Lanker See in the south. The bank zones are occupied by reed beds and sedge beds, which are followed by low moor and, in many cases , swamp forests . In addition, grassland areas of different degrees of moisture can be found, some of which are extensively grazed with Galloways . In the west of the Kühren peninsula, a semi-natural deciduous forest stands between the railway embankment in the west and the grassland area in the east . Some of the forest areas have valuable old wood . In places there are water-filled depressions and small bodies of water.

The nature reserve is the habitat of numerous water birds . For example, all European grebes - dwarf , crested , black-necked , eared and red-necked grebes - occur here from time to time , with the latter focusing on the Kührener pond. Even ducks occur numerous. So here are Krick- , Knäk- , Gadwall , spoon , herons and Goldeneye home. Laughter and Sturmmöwe that populate a breeding colony on the nearby Probst Werder, use the area for foraging. The reed zones are habitat for the bittern , marsh harrier and pond warbler , thrush warbler and reed warbler . The grassland areas offer meadow birds such as skylark , corncrake and whinchat a suitable habitat. Furthermore Neuntöter and Beutelmeise in the protected area at home. Also pipe and Warbler , Nightingale , nightingale , oriole , goldfinch , non-ferrous , medium , small , black and green woodpecker , lapwing , Greenshank and Redshank occur.

Numerous species of beetles have been identified on the Appelwarder , including the companion ground beetle Badister oeltatus and Blethisa multipunctatus, the weevil Hylobius transversovittatus, which lives on the purple loosestrife , and the leaf beetle Chrysolina graminis, which lives on the water mint . The latter occurs on the entire Lanker See. The occurrence of the two weevils and leaf beetles in Schleswig-Holstein is largely limited to the Elbe Valley . The weevil was also detected in Schleswig-Holstein on Fehmarn in the “ Grüner Brink ” nature reserve , in Lübeck and on the Schaalsee . In addition to occurrence in the Elbe Valley near Geesthacht and Lauenburg / Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein, only the occurrence at Lanker See is known of the leaf beetle . Furthermore were in the nature reserve the beetles Badister collaris, Badister peltatus, Badister dilatatus and Oodes helopioides, the leaf beetle Lema cyanella, Chrysomela graminis, Altica lythri, Psylliodes affinis, Psylliodes Dulcamarae and Phyllotreta ochripes, the woolly beetle Cerapheles terminatus that weevil Tanymecus palliatus , Limnobaris dolorosa , Ceutorhynchus melanostictus, Hylobius transversovittatus, Phytobius comari and Cleopus pulchellus, the raven- winged species Stenus carbonarius and Paederus riparius, the oil beetle Meloe violaceus, the scarab beetle Aphodius ater and the longhorn beetle Agapanthia villosoviridescens, all of which have been shown to benefit from the high proportion of herbs in the fairy grassland.

In the area of ​​the grasslands, flesh -colored and broad-leaved orchid, two rare types of orchid, can be found. The real cowslip also lives here , which is found in very large numbers on the Appelwarder. The Appelwarder is also home to the common adder tongue . The wet meadow and fen areas on the Kührener Peninsula house with Greenish and Schuppenfrüchtige Gelbsegge , Hirsesegge , Schwarzschopfsegge , Fadensegge , Saumsegge , Bogbean , Viola palustris , Thelypteris palustris , spearwort , Juncus Subnodulosus , Green Figwort , Devil's , Lysimachia Thyrsiflora , Eriophorum angustifolium , marsh cinquefoil and Flowering numerous endangered plants. The Sedge be primarily by Stiff Sedge and Carex riparia and several tall herb , including Breitblättriger shopping , water mint and Lysimachia formed.

The nature reserve is also a suitable habitat for the fire-bellied toad . It was therefore part of the LIFE Bombina project, which aimed to improve the living conditions of red-bellied toad populations in Natura 2000 areas in the Baltic Sea region .

A hiking trail leads into the nature reserve , which leads to a lookout point with an information board at the edge of the deciduous forest on the Kühren peninsula. Another lookout point with an information board is located in the south of Preetz on the edge of the nature reserve. Both viewpoints can be reached via branch paths from the Schusteracht , a cycling , riding and hiking trail in the Preetz region. The Naturschutzbund Deutschland operates an information hut with an exhibition at the Lanker See outdoor pool.
