The scaly sedge ( Carex lepidocarpa ), also called scaly sedge , is a species of the genus Seggen ( Carex ) within the sour grass family ( Cyperaceae ). It spreads in the northern hemisphere from Europe to northwest Africa and in eastern Canada .
description
Vegetative characteristics
Carex lepidocarpa is a deciduous, perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. It forms small, loose or firm clumps . Like the rest of the plant, the above-ground parts of the plant are colored light green to yellow-green. The leaves are 2 to 3 millimeters wide.
Generative characteristics
The flowering time is in May and June. The bracts of the 5 to 10 cm long inflorescence are leaf-like and are mostly oblique. At the tip there is a terminal, stalked male spikelet , below it there are 1 to 2 lateral female spikelets. The female spikelets are 7 to 15 mm long and 7 to 10 mm wide. The male spikelets are much slimmer and are 10 to 25 mm long and 2 to 3 mm wide. The 4.5 mm large tubes are initially green when immature, later they change color to a characteristic yellow-green; they quickly narrow into a 2 mm long, two-toothed, clearly downwardly curved beak.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 68.
Occurrence
The distribution area of Carex lepidocarpa includes Europe to North Africa and eastern Canada. Carex lepidocarpa is widespread in large parts of Europe. In Germany it occurs only sparsely or rarely.
It prefers to colonize low -nutrient , lime-rich low and spring moors as well as bog forests. It also occurs secondarily on wet meadows, by streams and in ditches. It is a weak character species of Juncetum alpini from the association Caricion bicolori-atrofuscae, but it also occurs in societies of the association Caricion davallianae.
Their populations in Germany are declining due to the destruction of their habitats such as the mining and excavation of moors. Nationwide it was classified as endangered in 1996 on the Red List of Vascular Plants.
