The Joseph Beuys Comprehensive School is a comprehensive school with secondary levels I and II in all-day form in Düsseldorf , North Rhine-Westphalia . The school was founded in 1992 and has been named after the artist Joseph Beuys since September 28, 2000 .

profile

The school is based, among other things, on Beuys' theory of social sculpture , in which every individual can become active in changing society , provided that freedom of design, in conjunction with self-determination and assumption of responsibility , is possible. Schoolchildren , parents and teachers use the legally secured freedom to design themselves.

At the Joseph Beuys Comprehensive School, performing and designing is the fourth main subject and therefore has equal rights alongside German , English and mathematics .

Other features of the school are:

Student company

In order to get to know economic relationships and thereby promote entrepreneurial thinking and action, the Joseph Beuys Comprehensive School was the first school in Germany to organize its student companies under the umbrella of a cooperative in September 2004 . According to the school, the student companies are thus independent of extracurricular interest groups and no longer work like others as joint stock companies or dependent on companies or associations .

Before this step, the student companies received their share capital in the form of shares that they had to sell to shareholders in order to generate the highest possible profits over the course of the school year. But that contradicted the ideas of its namesake Beuys. Politically, he campaigned intensively for alternative forms of economy and for democratic equality and self-responsible action in all areas of life.

Prices

Alongside other schools, the school has awarded the “Gandhi Prize for Civil Courage and Nonviolent Change” since 1998, which is donated by the Umbruch educational institution in Dortmund. In 2005, the school won 2nd place in the "Schools Against Violence" competition, which the state capital Düsseldorf awards to schools for their innovative and sustainable projects on the subject of violence prevention .
