The Barsbeker lake lies in the provost's near Wendtorf in Plön directly on the Baltic coast. It is only separated from the Baltic Sea by a beach wall .

location

The lake is located in the 146 hectare nature reserve Barsbeker See and the surrounding area , which is registered under number 116 in the directory of nature reserves maintained by the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas.

The lake is part of a long depression that is mostly below sea level. The beach wall to the Baltic Sea is of natural origin. In front of the beach wall is the spit hook and the Bottsand nature reserve .

history

Fernau, which flows through the Barsbeker See, could only drain into the Baltic Sea through a small opening in the west of the beach wall. During storm surges, however, salt water also penetrated the lowlands and the lake through this opening. The designation “ salt marshes ” for the grassland in the lowlands around the lake still indicates this fact.

The first dike was built in 1821 between the places Wisch and Heidkate and served the purpose of making the use of the salt marshes more productive. The dike was largely destroyed in a storm surge in 1835. Then another dike was built further west, the Barsbeker dike, which broke in 1872 during a storm surge. The entire valley was flooded by salt water. The Barsbeker See only became an inland waterway with the third dike built in 1882. In 1920 the salt marshes began to be drained.

Since the construction of the third dike, the drained peatland has been continuously sinking and the Barsbeker See is increasingly silting up. The former salt marshes have become pastureland.

natural reserve

The lakeshore is practically inaccessible due to its wide belt of reeds. It therefore offers a protection and relaxation area for numerous animal and plant species.

In § 3 of the Nature Conservation Ordinance, it says: "The nature reserve serves to preserve the historically significant manifestations of a shallow, coastal brackish water lake with extensive reed beds, species-rich brackish-water tall herbaceous areas and salt meadow areas as well as a diverse fauna."

Those interested in ornithology will find good observation opportunities on the old and new dikes.
