The 21.37 km² large Lake Selenter is the second largest lake in Schleswig-Holstein after the Great Lake Plön .

The Selenter See, which is located near the town of Selent in the district of Plön , is 14 m deep on average and is 37  m above sea level. NN . The lake is drained through the only 10 km long Hohenfelder Mühlenau in the north and through the Salzau in the northwest into the Baltic Sea. The northern part of Lake Selenter and the surrounding area is a nature reserve .

The formation of the Selenter See goes back to the Vistula Ice Age , which formed a basin and at the same time formed terminal moraine walls up to 132 m high in the east and up to 90 m high in the south . The pond is from the perspective of geology known as a Zungenbeckensee .

The lake is also known for its abundance of fish. It contains eels , perch , pike , and large and small vendace, as well as roach in large numbers . During the Second World War the Selenter See was used because of its long, compact body of water as a water airport, which had its landing site in Bellin on the sandy beach there and whose staff stayed at Bellin Air Base, which for about 12 years after the war was a large refugee camp for refugees from Pomerania , Danzig and East Prussia was used.
