Shministim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shministim is an Israeli youth movement for conscientious objection .

background

The name Shministim literally means: twelfth grader . These are young people between 17 and 19 who are still going to school or who have just finished school and now have to do their two to three years of military service in the Israeli army .

In 2001, several hundred Israelis called up for military service sent an open letter to Ariel Sharon declaring that they would not do their service in the occupied Palestinian territories . This gave rise to the Shministim movement. It refers to a tradition that has existed since the early 1970s when a group of students wrote to Prime Minister Golda Meir

Anyone who evades military service in Israel must expect a prison sentence, as there is no general basic right to conscientious objection and few opportunities for alternative services.

As 20-year-old activist Omer Goldman said, “I believe in a service to society that I am part of, and that is precisely why I refuse to participate in the war crimes my country is committing. Violence will not solve the problem and I will not use force no matter what. ”Her first detention was from September 22nd to October 10th, her second detention from October 12th to 24th, 2008.
