The Schulensee and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein city ​​of Kiel and the municipality of Molfsee in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district .

The 69  hectare nature reserve is registered with the number 120 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1986 (date of regulation: July 31, 1986). The nature reserve is largely part of the FFH area "Upper Eider area including lakes". In the southeast it borders on the landscape protection area "Eidertal bei Flintbek". In the south, the landscape protection areas "Landscape of the Upper Eider" and "Between Eidertal and Klosterforst Preetz" and in the north the landscape protection area "Drachensee, Russee and surroundings". Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the city of Kiel and the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Kiel on the edge of the Gaarden district of Kiel in an ice age basin of the upper Eider Valley. It puts the Schulensee and the surrounding wetland under protection. The open water areas of the Schulensee, through which the Eider flows, are in places occupied by floating leaf associations made of yellow pond and white water lilies, as well as floating pondweed , knotweed and frog spoons . It close Verlandungs reedbeds with Ästigem bur reed and a large area reedbeds of reeds and narrow and broadleaf cattail on. The reed stands are often joined by reeds made up of water swaths and arrowheads, as well as large sedge stands , etc. a. with pointed and swamp sedge . Miracle sedge and panicle sedge can be found in small areas . The reed and reed zones merge into wet bushes and, especially in the south of the Schulensee, also into alder swamp forest with black currant and pointed sedge in the undergrowth. Fallen broke grassland areas are of Hochstaudenfluren with Genuine meadowsweet , marsh iris , vulgar loosestrife , marsh forget-me , bittersweet nightshade and reeds and reed canary grass ingested. The tall herbaceous corridors serve u. a. Wild bees as a source of food. The Eider is accompanied by willow bushes. In the north-west in particular, the lake borders directly on the residential developments in the Schulensee district of the Molfsee community.

The leaves of pond lilies and water lilies are used as breeding grounds by the black tern , which forms one of its last breeding colonies here in eastern Schleswig-Holstein. Also, Kingfisher , Nightingale and Nightingale are native in the nature reserve. The nature reserve is a suitable habitat for common toads , fire-bellied toads and moor frogs , as well as for the dragonfly species great shell-eye , autumn dragonfly , water maiden and early reed hunter . The reed zones are the habitat of the Marsh Harrier , Bittern , Rohrschwirl, as well as Thrush , Pond and Reed Warbler . The Schulensee is a resting and wintering area for numerous water birds , including teal , gadfly , heron , golden pochard and pochard as well as goosander , whooper swan and Canada goose .

A hiking trail runs around the nature reserve, which is managed by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany . There are viewpoints at several points from which parts of the nature reserve can be viewed.
