Ahrensee and northeastern Westensee is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Achterwehr , Felde , Westensee , Rodenbek and Mielkendorf in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district .

The approximately 621  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 140 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled at the end of 1989 (date of regulation: December 22, 1989). It is part of the FFH area "Area of ​​the Upper Eider including lakes" and almost congruent with the 628 hectare EU bird sanctuary "NSG Ahrensee and northeastern Westensee". It is adjacent to the conservation area "West Lake scenery," even to the conservation area in the East "Kiel Fjord environment". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district.

The nature reserve is located west of Kiel in the northeast of the Westensee Nature Park . It includes the Ahrensee , a former bay of the Westensee , which is separated from it by a flat, approximately 150-meter-wide land bridge , the northeastern part of the Westensee and the northern part of the Kleiner Schierensee , each with banks and adjacent areas, the Schierenbachtal, the eider valley between stone and Furth Hohenhude and Hans Strand trench southwest of Schön Wohld (below the circuit road 32).

The Westensee area was formed during the Glacial Vistula . It is characterized by the lakes with their shallow water areas and varied bank zones, moist riparian forests and old beech forests as well as moist grassland areas along the watercourses. Numerous birds are native to the nature reserve . Various diving ducks such as the tufted duck , golden-bellied duck , coot , pygmy hawk , crested grebe , black necked grebe and little grebe can be found here. The reed areas offer u. a. Bittern and Marsh Harrier a habitat. Also, Kingfisher , lapwing and black woodpeckers are found in the nature reserve. The white-tailed eagle is native to the natural forests.

In the lakes and rivers there are various, sometimes very rare species of fish such as bleak , aland , white bream and wolffish as well as mussels , including river , brook , pond , painter and wandering mussels . The meadows in the Eider valley are tended by mowing and extensive grazing. Here come u. a. Marsh marigolds in front. The wet grassland between Ahren and Westensee offers z. B. quiver grass , overlooked riding grass, dioecious sedge , rush edging , swamp valerian and cuckoo carnation as well as the orchid species stiff and broad-leaved orchid a habitat.

The nature reserve is looked after by the Schleswig-Holstein State Association of the Federal Environment and Nature Conservation Germany . A visitor guidance system with information boards is intended to prevent disturbances by people in the nature reserve.
