The Bültsee and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein municipality of Kosel in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district .

The 55  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 104 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1982 (date of regulation: June 3, 1982). The nature reserve is part of the FFH area " Großer Schnaaper See , Bültsee and adjacent areas". It borders the "Hüttener Vorland" conservation area . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district.

The nature reserve is located northwest of Eckernförde in a drainless depression of the Schnaaper Sanders on the edge of the Schlei Nature Park . It places the approximately 20 hectare Bültsee and the areas surrounding it under protection. These are largely taken up by grassland . Partial areas are occupied by scramble forest and small forests . In the nature reserve there are also two small boiler bogs in the east and dry grassland and heather areas in the west. Cottongrasses ( narrow-leaved and deciduous cottongrass ) can be found in the moors . In the dry areas in the west are heather , hare and field clover , mountain sand bells and various lichens and mosses found. The grassland, which was used as arable land before it was placed under protection, is extensively grazed for maintenance with the aim of promoting the development of lean and dry grass communities. The grassland areas also serve as a buffer zone to the agricultural areas surrounding the nature reserve .

From the mid-1980s onwards, grazing began with sheep. However, this did not stop the spread of trees and reeds . In 1996 the bank areas of the lake were cleared and grazing experiments with Galloway cattle were carried out on the north bank . Grazing with Galloway cattle was extended to a few sections of the entire nature reserve by the end of the 1990s, which resulted in a considerable increase in many of the rare species in the nature reserve. The nature reserve is the project area of ​​the Life project “Aurinia”, which aims to preserve and restore the habitats of the golden pied butterfly .

The Bültsee has shallow water zones. Here are European beach Ling , Isoetes lacustris and lobelia dortmanna and myriophyllum alterniflorum ago. Pill fern and bristle moor rush can be found on the lakeshore .

In the north, on the edge of the nature reserve, there is a hiking trail that leads to the lake in two places. There are information boards here as well as at a vantage point on the edge of the nature reserve and at a nearby parking lot. There is a small swimming area on the west bank of the lake. In the northwest, a sports field borders the nature reserve, which partially protrudes into the nature reserve.

The nature reserve, which borders the state road 253 to Kosel in the west, is looked after by the association for the promotion of environmental protection in the rural area of ​​Schleswig-Holstein. The lake belongs to the municipality of Kosel, the adjacent areas to the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation .
