The Schwansener See ( Danish Svans Sø ) is part of the nature reserve named after him Schwansener See.

location

It lies between the towns of Damp in the south, Schönhagen (municipality of Brodersby ) in the north and Dörphof in the west, on the Schwansen peninsula , directly on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district . The Schwansener See is an inland lake with a size of 108 hectares , which is separated from the Baltic Sea by a narrow spit . It is surrounded by a closed reed border. The nature reserve, which also includes the landscape around the lake, is characterized by salt marshes and agricultural pastures. It is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas . On the spit there is a hiking trail, which is part of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route , and an information center of the Naturschutzbund Germany . The entire nature reserve has a size of 215 hectares and includes a shallow water zone section of the Baltic Sea.

Emergence

The area is originally a Baltic Sea bay that was formed by the last Ice Age . Sand deposits that were transported from the steep coast near Schönhagen have led to a separation from the sea. The resulting spit, which separates the lake from the Baltic Sea today, was often flooded by salt water in earlier times. The water in the lake became brackish after being separated by rainwater and a freshwater inflow . After the bank reinforcements were built, no more salt water penetrated, so the water slowly drains.

use

The nature reserve, which is also designated as an FFH area and an EU bird sanctuary , provides a basis for life and food for numerous bird species (around 100 breeding bird species). It is also a resting and wintering area for around 5000 birds that stop here in spring and autumn. Boats and other watercraft are not allowed to enter the lake . Bathing is not possible.
