The natural forests in the Landesforsten Barlohe are a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Bargstedt , Hamweddel , Luhnstedt , Mörel , Nienborstel and Stafstedt in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district .

The approximately 375  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 212 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitization . The nature reserve is part of the 2,366 hectare EU bird sanctuary "Staatsforsten Barlohe" and a large part of the 711 hectare FFH area "Forests of the northern Itzehoer Geest" The area has been under protection since June 30, 2017 (date of regulation : May 30, 2017). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district.

The nature reserve, which consists of seven sub-areas, is located northwest of Neumünster and south of Rendsburg in the Aukrug Nature Park . It includes several forest complexes, of which 334 hectares are designated as natural forest :

  • an area of ​​the "Hamweddeler Geheges" (bird sanctuary, natural forest) north-west of Hamweddel,
  • two areas of the " Großer Haaler Geheges " ( Great Haaler Enclosure ) between Embühren and Todenbüttel (bird protection and FFH area, natural forest)
  • an area of the "Luhnstedter Geheges" (bird protection and FFH area, almost entirely natural forest) to the northwest of Nindorf ,
  • an area of the "Born" (bird sanctuary, partly natural forest) between Luhnstedt and Oldenhütten ,
  • an area of the "Geheges Himmelreich" located northeast of Heinkenborstel (bird sanctuary, partly FFH area, mostly natural forest) and
  • an area of ​​the "Geheges Westerholz" located southwest of Heinkenborstel (bird protection and FFH area, mostly natural forest).

The forest complexes of the Schleswig-Holstein Geest landscape typical beech forest beech forest Woodruff and in the states Luzulo-Buchwald and English oak-hornbeam forests formed. The shrub layer is u. a. formed from holly and occasionally yew . Some endangered species live in the herb layer, including alpine witchweed , Scheidiger yellow star , rib fern and meadow horsetail . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

In the forests there are source areas and near-natural streams, especially in depressions, there are also swampy areas. Riparian forests with black alder and ash grow frequently along the streams . The forest edges are close to nature.

The forests are the habitat of species-rich flora and fauna. Of particular importance according to the Birds Directive are eagle owl , eagle , honey buzzard , red kite , black stork , Central and black woodpecker . In the "Hamweddeler Gehege" a colony of starlings nests in their natural habitat. The brooks house the brook lamprey with relatively large populations in the “Großer Haaler Gehege” and “Gehege Himmelreich”. In standing water is great crested newt home.

Areas that are still managed for forestry are to be subject to largely self-dynamic development from 2021. By the end of 2020, non-native conifers, some of which are growing in the forests, are to be harvested. Forest areas adjacent to the nature reserve should be developed in a natural way and serve as a buffer zone.
