O mio babbino caro (“O my dear papa”) is the name of an aria from Giacomo Puccini's one-act opera Gianni Schicchi . The opera premiered in 1918 together with Il tabarro and Suor Angelica as Il Szenico (The Triptych) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City . The Italian libretto is by Giovacchino Forzano . O mio babbino caro is the most famous piece of the opera, which is why Gianni Schicchi is often performed outside of the triptych. The soprano aria is sung in the middle of the opera by the daughter of the title character Gianni Schicchi, Lauretta. Lauretta brings it towards her father her great love for the young Rinuccio expressed that goes so far that they even drowning in the river Arno would plunge if they do not come true. The piece is considered to be one of the most famous and popular opera arias. For example, the Australian soprano Joan Hammond won a gold record in 1969 for over 1 million copies of the aria sold under the English title O My Beloved Father .

text

O mio babbino caro,
mi piace è bello, bello;
vo'andare in Porta Rossa
a comperar l'anello!
Sì, sì, ci voglio andare!
e se l'amassi indarno,
andrei sul Ponte Vecchio ,
ma per buttarmi in Arno!
Mi struggo e mi tormento!
O Dio, vorrei the!
Babbo, pietà, pietà!

O my dear papa,
I love him and he is beautiful, beautiful;
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the wedding ring!
Yes yes i want to go there!
And if the love was in vain,
I go to the Ponte Vecchio,
throw myself into the Arno!
I destroy and torture myself!
Oh God, I want to die!
Father, have pity, have pity!
