What Lies Beneath Colors in the Dark (2013)

What Lies Beneath is the third album from Tarja Turunen and 3 September 2010 appeared. Since Turunen's first solo album, Henkäys Ikuisuudesta, was made during her time as a singer with Nightwish , What Lies Beneath is often referred to in the press as the singer's second album.

In contrast to its predecessor My Winter Storm , Turunen produced the album himself and was involved in the composition of all the songs on the CD.

Two of the songs on the album were posted as videos on the album's website prior to the release date. In addition, since August 11, 2010, excerpts from all tracks on the album can be found on this website.

Emergence

The first work on What Lies Beneath began in Antigua in February 2008 , during a break between two parts of the My Winter Storm tour. Turunen worked here with two friends, Torsten Stenzel and Angela Heldmann, who were also involved in the songwriting for the previous album. The title of the album was announced on January 25, 2009, at that time as a preliminary working title. On June 22 of the same year, Turunen then presented a song intended for the new album for the first time at a concert in Bucharest. The ballad If You Believe , sung only to the piano, was later not included in the album, but can only be heard on the singles Until My Last Breath and I Feel Immortal . On January 16, 2010, attention was drawn to the blog for the new album from the blog of the previous album.

The album was recorded from February to July 2010 and released in early September 2010 (September 3 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland). The US version came out on August 31, 2010 with a slightly different cover, a different track list order, only one bonus track and without the bonus tracks of the deluxe edition.

The album is available as a simple CD edition, as well as a “deluxe” edition with an additional CD containing three bonus tracks and a 13-minute making-of .

Cover

The artwork was designed by Dirk Rudolph. The cover shows the singer's face, partly in bright light, partly overshadowed by bars or something similar. The USA cover shows the face in a very similar pose, only without the shadows of the bars. Artificial scars and shreds of skin can be seen on Turunen's face on both versions of the cover, as well as on the cover of the deluxe version. These are located on the edge of the face and partly in the shadow. According to Turunen, this should clarify the concept of the album, which says that when you look at a person, an object, etc. repeatedly, new aspects of what you are observing open up again and again.

promotion

On the official website for the album, the instrumental version of the song If You Believe was published, which appeared on August 27, 2010 as a bonus track on the limited edition single I Feel Immortal . This instrumental version was also used as the intro of several concerts, including Turunen's appearance at Wacken Open Air 2010. The singles Falling Awake , I Feel Immortal and Until My Last Breath were released before the album was released . For Falling Awake , a video was released that shows Turunen and other musicians represented on the album during the recordings for the album. Two videos were shot in Iceland for the singles I Feel Immortal and Until My Last Breath . Both led Joern Heitmann Director . Another music video for Until My Last Breath was later released. It shows Turunen's fictional death and its equally fictional media reception. One of the most famous Finnish news anchors , Arvi Lind , was hired for this.

reception

The reception of the album is determined by various tendencies.

Thus, What Lies Beneath be much tougher and " more rock " than its predecessor My Winter Storm described and calls with the music according to some critics associations Nightwish forth.

Turunen's singing itself is largely received positively and the contributions of the guest musicians also convince most of the critics. The songs Anteroom of Death , In for a Kill and Crimson Deep are particularly praised . The number of ballads , however, is sometimes perceived as too high and therefore annoying and criticized.

Sometimes it is noted by critics that Turunen has created an enjoyable album, but has not yet exhausted the full potential of their music:

“The problem with Tarja's voice is that it's so forceful, it's rather difficult to find the right music to support it without being drowned out or made to sound generic against such a force. What Lies Beneath succeeds in this more often than not, but that issue is still problematic to Tarja making a classic […] record ”

“The problem with Tarja's voice is that it is so powerful that it is rather difficult to find the right musical accompaniment without it being drowned out or sounding ordinary alongside this powerful voice. On What Lies Beneath this succeeds mostly, but this topic is still problematic for Tarja in order to create a classic. "
