A single ticket , also a single ticket , ticket , ticket (Switzerland) or ticket , is a ticket for a single journey from a starting point A to a destination B in public transport . This generally involves changing to the destination using the shortest possible route Way or to be reached in the shortest possible time. A time limit (usually 60, 90 or 120 minutes in city traffic, train tickets outside of transport associations until the end of operations) limits the validity. Any number of breaks in the journey can be permitted, but tariff provisions are possible that only allow a change and a continuation of the journey with the next possible connecting means of transport, i.e. exclude journeys. Return trips and tours are generally not permitted.

At Deutsche Bahn, if there are several possible routes between the start and destination, guidance points are indicated on the ticket that limit the route variants. This is stated as “via:” with a series of letter abbreviations for the cities. See also list of guiding points.

Are output also multiple tickets , and trading cards , fields cards , dozen cards , punch cards or the use of - depending on by traveling zone number - turn buckling strip stripe cards called, relatively at a discount to a one way, for example for four trips. These can be used for outward and return journeys and also by several people at the same time. Return tickets , in Switzerland return tickets , for a single outward and return journey, on the other hand, often do not grant any discounts, but they save the passenger another ticket purchase for the return journey and the transport company selling costs. Stripe tickets can also be based on a zone tariff (example national tariff system of the NetherlandsStrippenkaart ). A stripe must be validated for each tariff zone or the target zone traveled through. Two strips are often necessary for the entry zone. Cards with a high number of stripes (e.g. 45) can be discounted.

A distinction is often made between tickets for short journeys (a few stops , an inner city area, often without transfer authorization), an urban area or a regional route. Tickets can be issued specifically for a specific connection (flight tickets, train connection with DB) .

Another type of ticket are time tickets (day, week, month tickets). These allow any number of journeys within a defined local area of validity within a defined period (temporal area of validity, e.g. outside of rush hour ). Connection single tickets issued for this purpose, e.g. for a further journey beyond the geographical area of validity, are additional or supplementary tickets .

If a single ticket is issued for any journey (including return, circular or detour journeys) and is only given a time limit, it becomes a time card; A city ticket that is valid for one to two hours can therefore also be used as a season ticket. However, if such tickets replace normal single tickets, they are often offered as single tickets (example: hourly ticket from Graz AG Verkehrsbetriebe ).

Single tickets can be offered at all-inclusive prices. There is also the option of specifying a fixed price for a certain maximum distance ("€ 10 for up to 100 km"). There is a special ticket in the NRW tariff : The SchöneFahrtTicket NRW specifies a time instead of a route. The possible distance from A to B is limited here by the validity period of two hours. Since return and round trips are excluded, this is a single ticket; the removal of this restriction would lead to a season ticket.

Single tickets can already be “validated” - that is, given the date and time - for the immediate start of the journey, or in advance for later journeys (in advance sales). There are also single tickets for taking bicycles with you or for the transport of similar items ( bicycle cards ), whereby prams and wheelchairs are always transported free of charge.

Instead of traditional single tickets made of paper or cardboard, some transport companies issue so-called tram coins in advance sales , now usually referred to as tokens or tokens, which are collected before or during the journey.
