With around 4500 inhabitants, Bremthal is the largest district of Eppstein in the Main-Taunus district in southern Hesse and, along with Vockenhausen, is the economic center.

geography

The highest point of the district is at 350  m on the forest path to the Judenkopf , about 800 meters west of the summit ( 410  m ). To the south of the same is a water tank that supplies Bremthal and Lorsbach with water.

history

The oldest surviving documentary mention as Bremedal dates from the year 1204. The place name can be traced back to the Middle High German breme for thorn bush . This leads to the conclusion that the place, which was probably founded in the 12th century from Eppstein on the border opposite the Nassau area in the west, either referred to the wild broom growing here or to the Gebück , the border fortification removed around 1700.

Bremthal originally belonged to rule Eppstein , then an Electoral Mainz City and was at the time of the Duchy of Nassau for office Idstein .

Probably since the 13th century, documented since 1393, iron ores in the form of brown and red iron were mined in Bremthal. The ore was first extracted in pits and later in mined shafts. The mining was finished in the early 19th century.

Territorial reform

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1971, Bremthal and Niederjosbach voluntarily merged to form the new municipality of Bremthal. On January 1, 1977, this community, the city of Eppstein and other communities were merged by law to form a city with the name "Eppstein".

Says Bertha von Bremthal

Whether there ever was a castle or a noble family in Bremthal has not been conclusively clarified. In any case, the story of Bertha von Bremthal can be referred to the realm of legend. A certain knight Eppo, who could be Duke Eberhard (921-927), is said to have freed the beautiful damsel, who was held captive by a giant, with the help of a Bremthaler blacksmith.

religion

Catholic Church

Catholic Church

There are two churches in Bremthal. From 1311 a so-called pleban (people priest) and from 1329 a separate pastor was responsible for the pastoral care of the Bremthal community. After the old church was demolished, the Catholic Church of St. Margareta was built in 1888/1889 (the foundation stone was laid on June 24, 1888). It is a neo-Gothic structure and consists of a nave with pillars and a three-sided choir.

Protestant church

The Protestant Emmaus Church, a modern functional building by Jutta Bechtold-Schlosser , was inaugurated in 1997.

coat of arms

On November 4, 1968, the municipality of Bremthal was given a coat of arms with the following blazon : In a divided shield split at the top, a silver wheel in front, three red rafters in silver at the back, two diagonally crossed silver linden branches in blue on a red floor. This coat of arms was re-approved in its unchanged form in 1973 after the merger of Bremthal and Niederjosbach of the new Bremthal municipality.

A skate park was created with the participation of children, young people, interested parents and companies.

Local museum

Local museum

Today's local history museum was built in 1903 as an annex to the school and was used to store coal and wood. In the early 1950s, the house was extended and now used by displaced people who had found accommodation in the school. The community hearse, later the community-owned Unimog , was on the ground floor . Since 2010 the house has been operated by the Bremthaler Heimat- und Geschichtsverein as a local museum.

Bremthal old school

The old school in Bremthal is in the center of the town on Bornstrasse. The brick building by the architect Carl Belz from Langenschwalbach with two to eight window axes has ornamental variations in the brickwork and ornate window frames. The house, the gable side of which is emphasized by a stepped closure and the highlighting of the entrance with a gabled risalit, was used as a town hall and a school.

Bakehouse

The Bremthal bakery next to the local history museum is a brick building with decorative elements in contrasting colors, such as door frames, cornices and pilaster strips. The bakery is the best preserved, but also the most recent example in the district. Originally the community bakery stood on the Kirchberg, a later one on Wiesbadener Straße. The current building was built around 1900 and used as a bakery until the 1950s. The stove is still there today. In 1983 the house was renovated and has been used as an event location ever since.
