Ehlhalten is a district of Eppstein in the Main-Taunus district in southern Hesse . With around 1200 inhabitants, it is the smallest in terms of population, but the largest in terms of area.
history
The oldest surviving documentary mention in a tithing register of the parish of Schloßborn as Elheldin dates from the years 1226–1239. Ehlhalten developed from two settlement cores, which are to the west and east of a ford over the Dattenbach . The western part with the agriculturally used areas reaching to Oberjosbach was probably in the 11th / 12th. Founded in the 19th century by the parish Schlossborn of the St. Stephen's monastery in Mainz. The wooded part of the settlement east of the brook on the Eppstein- Heftrich road apparently belonged to the Lords of Eppstein . This part of Ehlhalten did not belong to the parish of Schloßborn, but to Fischbach . The place was then a fief to the rule Eppstein, but was back on Electoral Mainz City and was at the time of the Duchy of Nassau for office Koenigstein .
Besides agriculture was Ehlhalten centuries in connection with the ring operated by Eppstein iron smelting the charcoal of importance. Up until the 17th century there were two grinding mills for equipment and weapons as well as three flour mills on Dattenbach and the Silberbach, which flows in just below the village .
After the Reformation , the Protestant denomination was introduced as in the entire Eppstein rule. With the beginning of the Electoral Mainz rule, the place became Catholic again from 1604.
Besides Wildsachsen, Ehlhalten was the only municipality in the Main-Taunus district in which the mayor's constitution was in effect until 1976, following an exception to the Hessian municipal code for small municipalities . On January 1, 1977, Ehlhalten became part of the town of Eppstein as part of the regional reform in Hesse .
religion
Protestant church
Ehlhalten belongs to the evangelical Emmaus community of Eppstein, based in Bremthal.
Catholic Church
The Catholic parish of St. Michael in Ehlhalten is part of the Eppstein pastoral area . The church itself was built in 1732 in place of an older church (which has been attested since 1482) on the same site. The church is located in the middle of the village and forms a narrow part of the passing county road. The apse was built in 1950/51. Parts of the baroque furnishings, including some figures of saints, have been preserved.
In 1999, the original barn on the Gräfliche Straße 6 homestead was converted into the parish hall of the St. Michael parish. The building bears the year 1631 on the gate beam. This parish barn is used for various events and can also be used by third parties. A large hall with a gallery and club room is available.
coat of arms
On April 19, 1968, the municipality of Ehlhalten was given a coat of arms with the following blazon : In a split shield above in silver a red scale, below in green two narrow silver wavy bars.
The scales are reminiscent of the Archangel Michael , who has been handed down as the patron saint of the Ehlhalten Church since the 18th century and who often appears in pictorial representations with scales as the "soul weigher". The two streams symbolize the community's wealth of watercourses. The colors red and silver are the colors of the Lords of Eppstein and the Electors of Mainz, to whose territories the municipality belonged one after the other from the late Middle Ages to the end of the Old Kingdom . The municipal council approved the design of the coat of arms at the meeting on November 21, 1967. It was drawn flawlessly from an artistic and heraldic point of view by the heraldist of the Hessian Main State Archives .

In 2004, Ehlhalten made it to the finals in the " Dolles Dorf " series on HR television and took second place. The author Nele Neuhaus chose Ehlhalten as one of the locations for the 2011 Taunus crime thriller "Wer Wind Sät".
