Local transport in Leipzig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transport in Leipzig consists of a suburban train, a tram and a city bus. The tram and city bus routes are operated exclusively by Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) and the S-Bahn by DB Regio Südost . Regional transport is also carried out by other transport companies. In Leipzig and the surrounding area, a common tariff of the Central German Transport Association applies to all modes of transport .

Rail transport

tram

On May 18, 1872, Leipzig received a tram system, which has been operated electrically since May 20, 1896. The Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe, which has existed since January 1, 1917, now maintains a total of 13 tram lines in the city. Overall, the tram network covers a route length of 146 kilometers, making it the largest in Saxony ahead of Dresden at 130.2 kilometers and the second largest in Germany (after Berlin). The longest line in the Leipzig network is line 11, which connects Schkeuditz with Markkleeberg -Ost for 22 kilometers and is the only Leipzig tram line to travel in three tariff zones of the Central German Transport Association. LVB has been modernizing its fleet for years, in particular with the articulated railcar NGT12-LEI and the Leoliner . At 1458 mm, the Leipzig tram has the widest gauge of German trams. The central hub in the tram network is the Hauptbahnhof stop in the city center, where 11 of the 13 tram lines meet.

A 10-minute basic cycle is offered on weekdays, and a 15-minute basic cycle in the evening, on Sundays and public holidays.

Train

Leipzig is the core of the S-Bahn network in Central Germany. Seven of the ten lines (S1 to S6 and S5X), together with the tram, form the backbone of local public transport and provide an important link to the region and to the neighboring Halle . Lines S7, S8 and S9 do not touch the Leipzig city area.

The main route of the S-Bahn is the City-Tunnel Leipzig with the underground S-Bahn stations Hauptbahnhof (deep), Markt, Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz and Bayerischer Bahnhof as well as the above-ground station Leipzig MDR. The nearly four kilometer long tunnel crosses the entire city center of Leipzig.

Endpoints of the S-Bahn lines include Oschatz , Zwickau , Geithain and Bitterfeld . Three lines run from Leipzig to Halle, the S3 via Schkeuditz and the S5 and S5X via Leipzig Messe and Leipzig / Halle Airport . The network was expanded to Dessau and Lutherstadt Wittenberg by 2017 .

Stations within the Leipzig city area are highlighted in bold. Individual stops outside of Leipzig are not shown. A complete overview of the lines can be found in the main article.

Stations

In addition to the main train station, there are 30 S-Bahn stations in the Leipzig urban area, some of which have arisen from the former suburban train stations. Today, only S-Bahn trains stop at most stations; Some regional trains also stop at some stations. At the Leipziger Messe station also hold selected distance trains at major trade shows.

Most S-Bahn stations offer transfer options to the Leipzig tram and bus network, and there are also regional bus routes, the so-called plus buses, which are specially tailored to the S-Bahn travel times. The arrival times at the connection points between bus and train are coordinated in such a way that waiting times are as short as possible and the buses run every hour on weekdays.

Bus transport

City bus

Bus traffic in Leipzig is carried out by LeoBus GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe. The bus network complements the tram network with tangential lines and district lines . In addition to inner-city traffic, there are also some inter-city bus routes to the neighboring districts. Around 160 buses operate up to 36 lines a day.

Since the introduction of the new bus network in 2010, a basic distinction has been made between city bus lines and regional bus lines, but a total separation between city and regional bus is not possible, as on the one hand city bus routes also perform regional transport tasks in the further course of the route, on the other hand individual regional bus lines only or mostly in the city Operate in Leipzig.

Lines 60, 65, 70, 74, 80 and 90 are also known as “city bus lines” (in the sense of Metrobus lines ) and have an outstanding position within the bus network. They basically run in time with the tram lines and run as tangential lines across the radial tram network, thus ensuring cross connections between the tram lines.

Lines 72 and 73 as well as 89 are the only bus lines that also touch the city center and meet at the central transfer station Hauptbahnhof .

Regional bus

The regional bus service to the Leipzig area is carried out by various companies. The route numbers of regional bus routes are always three-digit.

A special feature is the so-called PlusBus network. This network consists of 36 lines, the arrival times of which at the connection points between bus and train are coordinated so that a transition between bus and train is possible. These buses run at least every hour on weekdays, regardless of school days, and on weekends at least every two hours. The buses are marked with a plus symbol in addition to the line number.

Night traffic

As of April 1, 2018, the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe reorganized their night network. Night traffic is served between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. with bus lines N1 to N9 and tram line N17 (merging of tram 1 and tram 7, regular operation during the day). In the weekend nights these lines are supplemented by the lines N10 and N60. The S-Bahn also connects the city with the surrounding area, especially on weekends. At the so-called Leipzig night hub, there are timed connections between night buses and trams and the S-Bahn at Leipzig Central Station.
