Railway stations in Thuringia |
The Gotha station is the main station of the Thuringian town of Gotha . It is a stop for ICs and ICEs every two hours on the Thuringian Railway . Another adjacent route is the Gotha – Leinefelde railway to the north.
history
Gotha station was established in 1847 when the railway line from Halle to Bebra in Hesse was being built. At that time Gotha was the state capital of Saxony-Gotha and already had about 15,000 inhabitants. In 1870 the second railway line was built through Gotha, it leads via Mühlhausen to Leinefelde (from there to Göttingen ). The third and last line at Gotha station was the Ohratalbahn, which was built in 1876 to Ohrdruf and in 1892 to the railway line to Würzburg to Graefenroda .
In 1894 Gotha received a tram . The station became the junction of several lines. In 1929, the Thuringian Forest Railway, an overland tram, was built from Gotha train station through the city center to Tabarz , Waltershausen and Friedrichroda .
In 2007, the station forecourt was completely redesigned and the Thuringian Forest Railway stop relocated. In 2011, scheduled passenger traffic on the Ohratal Railway was discontinued.
building
The station building was built in 1848. The eastern part of this building has been preserved. This part of the main wing is one of the oldest train station buildings in Germany.
The station was built in the classical style with an embossed plaster facade and expanded several times. In 1907 it was given a spacious entrance area in the style of historicism . The "Bahnhofswirthschaft", which was previously located in a building on the station forecourt, moved into the west wing, which was added before 1907. This inn was run by Justus Peter. The "Berlin Garden", an outdoor restaurant, directly in front of the building, also belonged to the "Bahnhofswirthschaft".
In the 1930s the entrance area was modernized and the basement of the facade from 1848 was removed.
On February 6, 1945 bombs destroyed the restaurant as well as the entire west wing and part of the main wing. The eastern part of the main building from 1848 with its extensions and the entrance area from 1907 have been preserved. Except for a few repairs, this condition has remained unchanged to this day.
Platforms
There is barrier-free access to all platforms via an elevator, and they can be reached via stairs. Platform 1a is used by the RB 53 to Bad Langensalza. Platform 1 is used for regional traffic in the form of RE1 to Göttingen or Gera / Glauchau. Platform 2 is mainly used by long-distance traffic to Frankfurt and regional traffic to Eisenach. Platform 3 is served by long-distance traffic in the direction of Leipzig / Dresden and regional traffic in the direction of Erfurt / Leipzig.
