Leo Express as (spelling: LEO Express) is a private Czech transport company . The business areas are the transport of people by rail (subsidized and self-sufficient) as well as on the road with buses and minibuses and carsharing . The company functions in the Czech Republic as a railway company and as a long-distance bus company ; The companies Leo Express Transportation Inc. (USA), Leo Express Tenders sro (Slovakia), Leo Express Slovensko sro (Slovakia), Leo Express Polska Sp zoo (Poland), Smile Car as (Czech Republic) and, since the 20th July 2017 Leo Express GmbH (Germany).
Lines
Up to 11 pairs of trains run daily on the Prague - Ostrava axis :
- Two pairs of trains run from Prague to Košice ( Slovakia )
- Four pairs of trains run between Prague and Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště and one train between Přerov and Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště
- All other pairs of trains leave Prague and end either in Ostrava, Bohumín , Karviná or Bystřice nad Olší
There are also various bus connections that are served by the company's own buses (Leo Express and Leo Express Easy). These operate among others within the Czech Republic between Prague, Brno , Budweis , Český Krumlov , Klatovy , Pilsen and Zlín . In some cases there is a direct connection to the Leo Express trains. Leo Express also offers tickets for long-distance bus connections to and from Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia and the Ukraine.
Since August 24, 2017, the German subsidiary has been operating the Locomore long-distance train, which was acquired from bankruptcy, in Germany on the Berlin - Stuttgart route in partnership with Flixbus .

Leo Express owns five electric multiple units of the Stadler Flirt type , each with 237 seats. The 160 km / h trains have four classes of car : Economy (2nd class), Economy plus, Business (1st class) and Premium (luxury class). In September 2016, Leo Express signed a contract with the Chinese rail vehicle manufacturer CRRC for the delivery of 3 electric multiple units. For CRRC this is the first order in the European Union.
In mid-2018, Leo Express signed a lease for eleven LINT-41 and four LINT-27 multiple units, which have been available since mid-2019. These were used on the Harz-Elbe-Express until December 2018 and then adapted for operation in the Czech Republic.
Sales and prices
Tickets are available on the Internet, own and third-party sales outlets and from train staff. The company uses control prices ( yield management ) with a specific train connection .
According to the journal Eisenbahn-Revue International , Leo Express is engaged in a " ruinous price war " with the state railway České dráhy (ČD) and the private railway company Regiojet on the Prague – Ostrava main line . In 2015, tickets for the 356 km route were available from Leo Express from CZK 99 (around € 3.88, equivalent to 1 euro cent per person- kilometer ).
Market position and result
The market share of Leo Express on the main Prague – Ostrava route in 2013 was 30 percent, according to the company. The competitors ČD and Regiojet came to 25 and 45 percent respectively.
In 2013 Leo Express sold around 800,000 tickets and produced around 500 million passenger kilometers. The income from passenger transport was CZK 158.3 million , which corresponds to an extremely low average yield of around 1.2 euro cents per passenger-kilometer; In 2016 the company achieved a turnover of 95.4 million CZK (around 10.9 million euros).
Ownership structure
Leo Express is 80.55 percent owned by the CEO Leoš Novotný jr. Other owners are Martin Burda with 14 percent, CEO Peter Köhler with 2.19 percent, Rockaway Rail sro with 1.47 percent and other people with a total of 1.8 percent.
