The Gößnitz Station is a railroad - operating agency at the Leipzig-Hof railway and opening out here railways Glauchau-Gößnitz Schönbörnchen- and Gößnitz-Gera ( Mid-Germany Railway ).

The Gößnitz station was opened on March 15, 1844 with the section Altenburg - Crimmitschau by the Saxon-Bavarian Railway Company .

history

On July 1, 1841, construction began on the Leipzig – Hof railway line, the first section of which was opened on September 19, 1842 to Altenburg . On March 15, 1844, the section to Crimmitschau was opened and on July 15, 1851 the entire route was opened. The first Gößnitz station building was a wooden structure, which in 1858 had to give way to a new building when the Glauchau – Gößnitz railway line opened on November 15th. The Gößnitz – Gera railway was inaugurated on December 28, 1865. The third station building was built in 1893.

In Gößnitz there was a water tower with elevated tanks and water cranes for steam locomotives . These systems were no longer needed after the railway line from Leipzig to Reichenbach was electrified in 1962/63.

In 2007, work began on demolishing the water tower, the goods shed and the north wing of the representative, listed station building in the neo-baroque style. The rest of the structure followed three years later. Since then, the city has been trying to find a solution, as the site belongs to Deutsche Bahn and they see no need for action after the demolition.

In 2013, a bus turning loop and some parking spaces were built in front of the station area. Since December 15, 2013, Gößnitz has been integrated into the network of the Central German S-Bahn .

By the mid-2020s, the route from Leipzig to Werdau will be fundamentally renewed for speeds of up to 160 km / h. In this context, the conversion of the Gößnitz train station is planned as a Building Information Modeling (BIM) pilot project.

Platform length

Platform sign in Gößnitz

The Gößnitz train station was built with an extra long platform so that trains could leave one platform in different directions at the same time.

A sign on the train station says that the station has the longest platform in Germany at 608 meters. A structural length of 608 meters is also recorded in the station register of DB Station & Service. The useful length of the platform is only given as 435 meters.

In fact, Gößnitz does not have the longest platform in Germany. In the main train stations of Essen (667 meters), Mainz (627.5 meters) and Hamburg (627 meters) there are platforms with a longer structural length than in Gößnitz.

passenger traffic

history

Gößnitz was a stop for long-distance passenger transport until the 2000/2001 timetable. The last pair of long-distance trains that stopped in Gößnitz were the Interregio 2792 Munich Hbf - Leipzig Hbf and the D-Zug 2793 Leipzig - Munich. The Gößnitz train station is also an important hub for East Thuringia and West Saxony local transport. In addition, between December 2002 and June 2014, regional trains in Gößnitz were winged or combined. One part of the regional express line 1, coming from the direction of Erfurt, continued via Werdau to Zwickau, while the other part ran via Meerane to Glauchau. Until December 2011 the train part in the direction of Glauchau continued to Chemnitz and connected the two Saxon regional centers with the long-distance traffic hub in Erfurt. As part of the restructuring of regional traffic following the opening of the Leipzig City Tunnel , the train section to Zwickau was abandoned.

Track plan of the Gößnitz station

In the 2018/2019 timetable year, the station is served by the S5 and S5X lines of the Central German S-Bahn , which went into operation in December 2013 in connection with the Leipzig City Tunnel. The S5 line runs every hour from Halle Hauptbahnhof via Leipzig / Halle Airport , Leipzig Hbf to Altenburg , from there every two hours via Gößnitz and Werdau to Zwickau . The S5 is supplemented by an hourly express line S5X, which also begins in Halle and does not serve all stations. S5 and S5X replace the regional express lines 8 (Leipzig – Zwickau) and 16 (Leipzig – Hof / Bad Brambach) that previously operated here, as well as the regional train line RB 130 (Leipzig – Altenburg – Gößnitz – Zwickau / Glauchau).

The second important connection comes from Thuringia. Tilting technology - class 612 railcars operate from Göttingen via Erfurt , Jena-Göschwitz , Gera and Gößnitz via Meerane to Glauchau (Sachs) . In the direction of Meerane, the regional express, which runs every two hours, is supplemented by the RB 37 line of the Erzgebirgsbahn , which connects Gößnitz and Glauchau and, together with the aforementioned RE 1, runs approximately every hour.
