Arisaig ( Scottish Gaelic : Àrasaig) is a Scottish village in the Highland Council Area . It is located on the west coast of Scotland a few kilometers south of Mallaig . In 2011 there were 419 people living in Arisaig.

history

Arisaig is significant for Scottish patriots, as Bonnie Prince Charlie embarked near Arisaig on September 20, 1746 to flee to France after the failed Jacobite revolt . Today a plaque commemorates the historic event.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Arisaig was almost depopulated in the course of the Highland Clearances in order to free up pasture areas for sheep breeding . The residents were forced to emigrate and mainly settled in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia . There is a place with the same name there. On January 2, 1853, a John Silver was born in Arisaig, who, according to legend, Robert Louis Stevenson, served as a model for his character Long John Silver in the novel Treasure Island .

During the Second World War , the Special Operations Executive in Arisaig trained agents who were intended for use in continental Europe occupied by the Wehrmacht .

Arisaig today

Today Arisaig lives mainly from tourism due to its picturesque location . The village is easily accessible for tourists to Scotland, both by car via the Road to the Isles scenic road and by trains on the West Highland Line from Fort William . Arisaig Station is the UK's westernmost station . From the small port of the village, ferries run to the offshore islands of Eigg , Muck and Rùm . The ferry traffic only plays a subordinate role, as all larger ferries call at the port of the nearby Mallaig. In 1999 the Land, Sea and Islands Center was opened in the village . There is an exhibition on the history of the village and the offshore islands. Local artifacts are also shown.
