Local transport in Koblenz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Local public transport in Koblenz is primarily carried by an omnibus network , which is supplemented by the more regionally oriented rail transport. As an independent city , Koblenz is one of the shareholders of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel (VRM), which is responsible for pricing public transport in northern Rhineland-Palatinate.

Koblenz has six passenger stations: Koblenz Hauptbahnhof , Koblenz Stadtmitte , Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein , Koblenz-Lützel , Koblenz-Moselweiß and Koblenz-Güls. Both regional express and regional train lines run at the Koblenz Hauptbahnhof and Koblenz Stadtmitte train stations, while only regional trains run at the Koblenz-Lützel, Koblenz Güls and Koblenz-Moselweiß train stations. Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein station is served by a regional express line that stops at all stations between Koblenz main station and Neuwied. Long-distance passenger transport is only available at Koblenz Central Station. The railway lines on the northern branches of the left and right Rhine route and the regional train line on the Moselle route are particularly relevant for local passenger transport within Koblenz .

The regional transport lines operate at Koblenz main station:

Bus transport

Bus transport is the central means of transport in Koblenz local transport. There are three important transfer stations in the city center. These are located at the main train station, at Zentralplatz and at the Löhr-Center , which is located directly at the Stadtmitte train station. The “Vallendar Bahnhof” stop also serves as a transfer point from Line 8 to Line 7, which does not serve the three central transfer stops.

The bus lines, which mainly run through the city center, have one or two-digit line numbers and are mainly operated by the Koblenz mobility company under the name Koblenzer Verkehrsbetriebe.

In addition to the regular lines, electric cars are used on many routes in school traffic . Lines 12, 13, 15 and 16 condense lines 2, 3, 5 and 6 on some sections to a 15-minute cycle. All of these inner-city lines (with the exception of line 7) run via the Bahnhof Stadtmitte / Löhr-Center stop, but only a little more than half of them also serve the main station, which means that there is a change from long-distance rail transport and regional trains from Trier and Mainz urban bus traffic is made more difficult.

Other bus lines that operate in Koblenz are operated by the companies Rhein-Mosel-Bus , Rheinhunsrückbus , Rhein-Westerwald-Nahverkehr , Orthen Omnibusbetrieb and Griesar-Reisedienst. Almost all of these buses commute from Koblenz to neighboring places such as Nassau , Lahnstein , Boppard , Simmern / Hunsrück , Montabaur , Hachenburg , Altenkirchen (Westerwald) , Frankfurt-Hahn Airport , Mülheim-Kärlich , Neuwied and Höhr-Grenzhausen .

On the nights before non-working days, night buses (lines N1 to N11) from Koblenz to the surrounding area and most of Koblenz's districts leave at around 1 a.m. These are operated by the Koblenz municipal mobility company as well as by the regional bus companies.

Ferry traffic

The Schängel passenger ferry on the Rhine in Koblenz

Two public passenger ferries operate in the city of Koblenz: the Rhine ferry Koblenz commutes between the districts of Altstadt and Ehrenbreitstein, the Moselle ferry Koblenz between the old town and Neuendorf. The ferries have their own house tariffs . The VRM tariff is also recognized on the ferry between the city center and Ehrenbreitstein.

Cable car / inclined elevator to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

The Ehrenbreitstein inclined elevator on the east side

The Koblenz cable car connects the old town with the Ehrenbreitstein fortress , the Ehrenbreitstein inclined elevator (funicular) connects the Ehrenbreitstein district with the fortress. The cable car operator has its own tariff system for the use of the cable car, which does not allow use with VRM public transport tickets. The inclined elevator, on the other hand, has its own tariff system, just like the ferries, but can also be used with public transport tickets from the VRM.

history

Tram and trolleybus

The history of Koblenz local transport goes back to the 19th century. From 1887 to 1967 there was a tram operation in Koblenz. This initially ran as a horse-drawn tram until 1895 and was then gradually electrified . The network existed on both sides of the Rhine and Moselle . There were overland lines to the suburbs Oberlahnstein and Bendorf operated. After the Second World War , the destruction of the Rhine bridges split the network. As a result, the part of the network on the right bank of the Rhine was converted to trolleybuses. For financial reasons and because it was in need of renovation, the tram was finally discontinued in 1967 and replaced by omnibuses. In 1970 the trolleybus followed.

bus

Initially, the city bus routes were designated with letters. Most of the former tram and trolleybus routes continued to be operated as bus lines by Koblenzer Elektrizitätswerk und Verkehrs-AG (KEVAG) as part of the Koblenz city traffic , but the line numbers were largely retained, so that at times there were bus routes that were designated with letters as even those that were marked with numbers. It was not until the 1970s that the network was standardized and all lines were given numbers. Reinforcement lines were given an "A" for their number.

On July 1, 2014, KEVAG merged with Energieversorgung Mittelrhein (EVM), which has operated urban transport since then. With the timetable change in December 2014, extensive changes in the bus network took effect. Line 1 (previously Altstadt, Kornpfortstraße - Conlog Arena , today CGM Arena) now runs from the old town via the main station to Goldgrube (Beatusstraße / BBS) and replaces line 3 on this branch, which now ends at the main station when coming from Güls. The journeys that start or end in Bisholder (Mondays to Saturdays), previously also known as Line 3, are called Line 13. The previous connection between lines 5/15 and regional lines 570/571 to Lahnstein and Braubach is no longer applicable. Instead, line 5 takes over the former southern branch of line 1 to the Conlog Arena as well as the journeys of line 8 there on the edge of the day, while line 15 ends at Zentralplatz. In Karthaus, line 2 now runs on Am Spitzberg instead of Simmerner Straße. Line 12 is getting a completely new route in Karthaus. It now drives in both directions from the center through Hüberlingsweg, Zeisigstraße and Berliner Ring to the university and to the terminal in Karl-Härle-Straße. Due to complaints from the population, the route of line 12 on the Karthauser was adjusted again in the following years.

On October 1, 2019, the Koblenz mobility company , which was founded in the same year by the city of Koblenz as a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Koblenz, bought Evm Verkehrs GmbH. In doing so, it also acquired the concession to operate the inner-city bus routes. These are now operated under the name Koblenzer Verkehrsbetriebe.

Planning

At the moment (as of July 2016) two new train stops are planned in the Koblenz city area. One is to be built on the border of the Goldgrube and Rauental districts on the Moselle route . This should better develop the administrative center in Rauental, where around 10,000 people work. The second stop is planned in Horchheim on the right stretch of the Rhine .

Major changes in Koblenz bus services are planned for the timetable changes in December 2020 and December 2021. New bus lines are to be introduced and the frequency in the evening hours is to be increased.

Park and Ride

Park-and-ride facilities are located at Koblenz main train station, Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein train station and Koblenz-Lützel train station.

Bike and Ride

Bike-and-ride facilities for parking bicycles are located in Koblenz at the main train station, the Stadtmitte train station and the Ehrenbreitstein train station.
