Separation of the Lahn Valley Railway (left branch) and the right branch of the Rhine (right branch)

The Niederlahnstein train station is one of three train stations in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Lahnstein , along with the Oberlahnstein train station and the Friedrichssegen stop . The station that separates the Right Rhine Line and the Lahn Valley Railway is located in the Niederlahnstein district and forms a hub for local public transport in the Rhine - Lahn area.

history

In 1856, the Nassau Rhine Railway Company opened the first section of the Nassau Rhine Valley Railway from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim, which was licensed in 1853 . Due to financial and technical difficulties, the route was only extended to Oberlahnstein in 1862 and then to Niederlahnstein on June 3, 1864. There, the Rhine Valley Railway was connected to the Rheinische Eisenbahngesellschaft route to Koblenz and its left bank rail network via the Pfaffendorfer Bridge . Previously, a railway ferry temporarily connected the two routes with the Stolzenfels – Oberlahnstein trajectory .

On October 27, 1869, the continuation of the Nassau Rhine Valley Railway from Niederlahnstein to Neuwied was opened.

With the fall of the Duchy of Nassau as an independent state in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, the Lahntalbahn became part of the Prussian State Railways , which established a direct connection from Niederlahnstein via the Lahn to the main line not far from Friedrichssegen from May 15, 1879 . The confluence was at the Hohenrhein block .

In 1878/79 the Horchheimer railway bridge , an important connection between the right and left Rhine route , was built in the south of Koblenz . This created the direct connection between Niederlahnstein and Koblenz. During the same period, the station received a new reception building.

At the end of the Second World War , the station was the target of Allied air raids, on December 26, 1944, the station building was completely destroyed. A hospital train that had just run in was also hit, killing a total of 160 people in the attack.

After the Second World War, the destroyed Lahntalbahn section Niederlahnstein – Hohenrhein was only rebuilt on a single track.

The depot with turntable was dissolved as an independent service in August 1952.

Around 1960 the entire right-hand Rhine route from Cologne to Wiesbaden was electrified.

Between the beginning of June 2004 and the beginning of November 2009, the Niederlahnstein station was redesigned as the “Niederlahnstein environmental station” as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle in a pilot project by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. The core of the concept was the barrier-free expansion of the platforms. Three passenger elevators were built to the platforms. In addition, new platform roofs, a bicycle parking facility , short-term parking spaces and new entrances to the pedestrian underpass were built . The city of Lahnstein was commissioned with the redesign of the station forecourt . The total construction costs of the project amounted to 5.4 million euros.

In December 2007 the electronic signal box on the right Rhine was put into operation. The second construction phase of the project was completed in summer 2008. The Oberlahnstein – Niederlahnstein section was connected to the electronic signal box.

In 2007, the services on the Frankfurt – Koblenz section were put out to tender across Europe by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and the regional rail passenger transport association Rhineland-Palatinate North (SPNV-Nord). With the 2010/2011 timetable change on December 12, 2010, VIAS GmbH took over operations between Neuwied, Koblenz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt.

Reception building

The 1960 built reception building of the station was until 2017 by the Employment Agency used.

Track systems

The Niederlahnstein train station has extensive track systems. Passenger traffic is handled on four platform tracks (two central platforms ). There is no house platform.

The numbering begins on the west side of the reception building.

  • Track 2 is a through track as well as a main track of the Lahntalbahn and shares an island platform with track 3 . Today the trains that run on the Lahn Valley Railway stop here and continue to Koblenz Hbf .
  • Track 3 is a through track and is on the platform next to track 2. Today the trains to Limburg and Gießen stop here .
  • Track 4 is a through track and a main track on the right Rhine route . It shares another island platform with track 5. Today the VIAS trains stop here in the direction of Koblenz Hbf and Neuwied .
  • Track 5 is another through track and is located on the platform next to track 4. Here the VIAS trains go to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf via Rüdesheim and Wiesbaden Hbf .
  • Track 6 was a through track without a platform, which used to be used for freight traffic . About in the middle of the Niederlahnstein train station there is a buffer stop on this track , which means that this track can only be used from Niederlahnstein to Koblenz.
  • Track 7 is a through track that can be used for freight traffic, but today access to it was blocked and built over as part of the Niederlahnstein environmental station project. The island platform that still exists, which is shared by track 7 with track 8, is no longer used today.
  • Like track 7, track 8 is also a track that can only be used for freight traffic.

Railway systems in the greater Koblenz area

All local trains ( RE , RB ) on both routes stop here . Freight and individual long-distance trains pass through the station without stopping.

The Loreley-Bahn (RB 10) and the Loreley-Express (RE 10 ) operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB) operated on the southern section of the Right Rhine Line (Koblenz – Wiesbaden – Frankfurt) until the 2010/2011 timetable change in December 2010 were. As part of the Europe-wide tender, since December 12, 2010 only regional trains have been running every hour, sometimes even every half hour, which are now operated by VIAS GmbH . VIAS GmbH is using new multiple units of the Stadler Flirt type .

Since the 2004/2005 timetable change on December 12, 2004, multiple units operated by vectus Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH have been running on the Lahntalbahn between Koblenz Hbf and Limburg (Lahn) approximately every hour. With the timetable change in December 2014, this service was taken over again by Deutsche Bahn and the regional train line from Limburg to Koblenz was extended via Andernach to Mayen . The Lahntal Express regional express line also operates between Koblenz Hbf, Limburg and Gießen .
