The Rüdesheim (Rhein) train station on the right bank of the Rhine is the train station for the city of Rüdesheim am Rhein in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse .

Geographical location

The station is located on the western outskirts of Rüdesheim, narrowed between the steep slopes of the vineyards to the north and the banks of the Rhine in the south, some of which are no more than 20 meters away from the tracks. The station is opened up for road traffic from the city by the federal highway 42 , which here bears the name Rheinstraße and which runs parallel to the railroad tracks in the north. Shortly before the station area, the B42 crosses the tracks on a level crossing secured by barriers , in order to stay between the railway line and the banks of the Rhine in the further course to Lahnstein. The traffic light-regulated storage space for the Rhine ferry Bingen-Rüdesheim begins just beyond the level crossing . In this way, here at Rüdesheim train station is a starting point for many traffic jams in the Rheingau in business and excursion traffic. For decades, all attempts to defuse this traffic junction have fizzled out.

history

On August 11, 1856, the station was opened under the name Rüdesheim and was initially the terminus of the Nassau Rheinbahn from Wiesbaden . After the line to Oberlahnstein went into operation on February 22, 1862, it was a through station . At the same time, the Bingerbrück – Rüdesheim trajectory , which existed until 1900, went into operation with a ferry ramp 1500 meters west of the station . In 1907, in order to avoid confusion with the small station in Rüdesheim (Nahe) , the station was moved to Rüdesheim a. Renamed Rh .

On December 1, 1925, the treatment plant for (steam) locomotives in Rüdesheim was closed. Only the water crane remained in operation for the time being.

From 1915 to 1945, the connecting curve to the Hindenburg Bridge was in operation 1,500 meters east of the station .

The reception building is a two-storey plastered building of classicism . Today it is one of the cultural monuments in the UNESCO World Heritage "Upper Middle Rhine Valley" .

The station building was built in the years 1854–1856 according to a design by the architect Heinrich Velde from Diez . It corresponds to the uniform type of building for this time with an entrance hall and function rooms on the ground floor, and the station master's apartment on the upper floor. The plastered facade with a simple row of windows speaks the architectural language of classicist Nassau administrative buildings. Except in Rüdesheim, this type can still be found in its pure form in the Middle Rhine Valley at the railway stations of Oberwesel and Bacharach on the left-hand Rhine route .

In 2002 the badly run down station ensemble was acquired by the Heil brothers from Rüdesheim and completely renovated and repaired. In addition to the reception building, the acquired complex also includes the goods hall and a new office building, which are listed as a whole .

For the exemplary renovation, the private owners were awarded the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2007 for their extraordinary commitment to monument preservation . The station is now again the representative station building of the city of Rüdesheim, as it was once built.

The train station is not barrier-free. Access to the platforms is only opened when the train arrives. When the train from Koblenz arrives on platform 2, platform 1 has to be closed because the passengers entering and exiting have to cross it.

Signal box

The signal box Rüdesheim Rf was built in 1952 in the New Objectivity style as an electromechanical signal box . 1960 it became a switchboard converted Dr S2.

Long-distance transport

Rudesheim (Rhein) has long been the network of long-distance passenger traffic disconnected, not least because this along the Rhine to the West Rhine Railway and since 2002 the high-speed line Cologne-Rhine / Main focus while on the right Rhine distance the slow rail freight moves.
