The Rhine ferry Bingen – Rüdesheim consists of two ferry connections across the Rhine between Bingen am Rhein on the left bank of the Rhine in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate at river kilometer 528 and Rüdesheim am Rhein on the right bank of the Rhine in the Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse at river kilometer 527 a passenger ferry and a car ferry .

Geographical location

The floating dock of the passenger ferry on the left bank of the Rhine is located close to the city center at the Binger Stadtbahnhof , the ferry ramp for the car ferry is further out of town in the winter harbor. Both ferries land on the right bank of the Rhine near the Rüdesheim (Rhine) train station . Both ferry connections are operated by the Bingen-Rüdesheimer Fähr- und Schiffahrtsgesellschaft .

history

In Bingen and Rüdesheim, ferrymen and Rhine boatmen can look back on centuries of tradition. Since 1861, with the establishment of the Bingerbrück – Rüdesheim ferry service between Rüdesheim and Bingen , they faced stiff competition, first from the Prussian State Railways and later from the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The railway wanted to continue to operate the passenger transport on its own even after the end of the train service and also sold tickets for transfers to the trains.

Since 1928, the ferrymen at the Prussian Ministry of Trade and Industry resolutely opposed the railway's ferry monopoly. They found an open ear there in the responsible government councilor Paul Milatz. After a thorough examination of the factual and legal situation and after a business trip to the Rhine for an on-site visit, he finally forbade the Reichsbahn headquarters to continue organizing ferry services between Bingen and Rüdesheim. Milatz wrote in his notes that she should take care of her railways. As a result, 13 ferry and boatmen families joined together in 1930 to form the Bingen-Rüdesheim motorboat owners' cooperative . In the battle against the Reichsbahn in the summer of 1930, the ferrymen first fought for a ferry lease. On October 1, 1932, the Reichsbahn ceased ferry operations. In 1933, after the Reichsbahn had submitted to the initially bitter legal dispute against the Prussian Ministry of Commerce, the ferrymen signed a "State Ferry Contract". At the same time, the passenger ferry Stadt Bingen and the car ferry Stadt Rüdesheim were built in 1933 on behalf of the Schiffergenossenschaft . In the same year, the motor ship Minister Milatz was added as a second passenger ferry - with this name the motor boatmen wanted to pay tribute to the person who had helped significantly to secure the economic existence of their profession.

business

If necessary, the car ferry is served by two ferries at the same time in shuttle traffic in such a way that they are opposite each other on the ferry ramps on both sides of the Rhine and meet on the journey in the middle of the river. The operating time starts in the morning at 5:30 a.m. and ends at midnight in the summer months, otherwise at 10:00 p.m. The passenger ferry runs on the summer schedule between 9:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., otherwise between 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., every hour.

The fact that the barrier -protected crossing of the federal highway 42 over the right Rhine route, which is heavily frequented by freight trains, is between the ferry ramp on the right bank of the Rhine and the city of Rüdesheim, regularly causes traffic jams in business and excursion traffic.

The local conditions ensure that the ferry service can still be maintained even at high and low tide, when other ferries further up and down the Rhine have to stop operating. Operation only has to be stopped from the Bingen level of 650 cm, because the B42 at the Rüdesheim ferry ramp is then flooded.
