The Oberlahnstein train station is one of three train stations in the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Lahnstein , along with Niederlahnstein train station and Friedrichssegen station . The through station with today 2 platform tracks is located on the right Rhine route in the Oberlahnstein district . The adjoining freight station is now just an industrial wasteland .

history

A first section of the Lahntalbahn from Oberlahnstein to Bad Ems was opened on July 1, 1858, but shortly afterwards it was buried and impassable by a landslide .

In 1856, the Nassau Rhine Railway Company opened the first section of the Nassau Rhine Valley Railway from Wiesbaden to Rüdesheim, which was licensed in 1853 . Due to financial and technical difficulties, the route was only extended to Oberlahnstein on February 22, 1862 and to Niederlahnstein on June 3, 1864.

In 1862 the Stolzenfels – Oberlahnstein trajectory was built, which connected the right and left Rhine lines until 1864 .

In 1879 the Prussian State Railways established the Niederlahnstein – Hohenrhein branch. This was accompanied by a greater loss of importance for the Oberlahnstein train station. The station was later expanded, which was completed in 1909.

Around 1960 the entire right-hand Rhine route from Cologne to Wiesbaden was electrified.

The reception building, which was badly damaged in the Second World War and built according to plans by Heinrich Velde , was replaced by a new building in 1968.

On May 30, 1983, the Oberlahnstein – Friedrichssegen section was closed and dismantled. As a result, Oberlahnstein station lost its function as a railway junction in the Rhine - Mosel - Lahn area, which has now largely been transferred to the Niederlahnstein and Koblenz Hbf stations. However, with the exception of a short time after the Second World War, no passenger trains ran on this section since the 1910s.

In December 2007 the electronic signal box on the right Rhine was put into operation. The second construction phase of the project was completed in summer 2008 and the Oberlahnstein – Niederlahnstein section was connected to the electronic interlocking.

Oberlahnstein depot

A locomotive station was set up in Oberlahnstein as early as 1862, from which the Oberlahnstein depot later developed. In 1962 the depot was dissolved as an independent department. The roundhouse was demolished that same year.

Track systems

The Oberlahnstein train station once had extensive track systems, most of which were located on the now idle and derelict freight station . Passenger traffic is handled on a house platform and an outside platform .

The numbering begins on the southwest side of the reception building .

  • Track 1 is a through track and is located on the house platform directly in front of the reception building. This is where the RheingauLinie trains depart for Koblenz Hbf and Neuwied .
  • Track 2 is also a through track and shares an island platform with track 4. Here the VIAS trains go to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf via Rüdesheim and Wiesbaden Hbf .
  • Track 4 is a former through track and is the outermost platform track on the platform next to track 2. Due to dismantled switches and overgrown vegetation, this track is no longer passable.
  • The tracks of the former Oberlahnstein freight station are slightly offset from the tracks of the passenger station and are now just an industrial wasteland .

business

Only local trains stop at Oberlahnstein station.

The Loreley Railway (RB 10) and the Loreley Express (RE 10) operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB) operated on the southern section of the Right Rhine Line (Koblenz – Wiesbaden) until the 2010/2011 timetable change . Since December 12, 2010 the Stadt-Express  10 (RheingauLinie) has been running every hour, sometimes even every half hour. This is operated by VIAS GmbH . When the timetable changed in December 2016, this line was renamed RB 10 again.
