The Wasserbillig railway station in the same town Wasserbillig is a Luxembourg border station between Luxembourg and Germany . Wasserbillig station is on the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig and Ettelbrück – Grevenmacher railway lines . The station is served by RB and RE trains.
history
The station opened in 1861 with the construction of the railway line from Luxembourg City . In 1911, the line to Oetringen was expanded to two tracks and electrified from 1956 to 1959.
The Echternach –Wasserbillig section of the Ettelbrück – Grevenmacher railway was opened in 1874 by the Prince Heinrich Railway Company and Wasserbillig received a second station, just a few meters away from the first. In 1891 the last section to Grevenmacher was put into operation by the anonymous Luxembourgish Prince Heinrich Railway and Ore Mine Company (successor company after the bankruptcy of the first Prince Heinrich Railway Company).
During the Second World War , the Deutsche Reichsbahn created a direct connection between the two railway lines; beforehand, a long route had to be maneuvered for a route change.
The sections of the Ettelbrück – Grevenmacher railway that touched Wasserbillig were shut down in the 1960s , only the remainder to the Moselle port of Mertert is still in operation.
In December 2014, the Intercity between Norddeich Mole and Luxembourg was completely discontinued. Since then, a regional express (RE 11) has been running every hour between Koblenz and Luxembourg with a stop in Wasserbillig.
