The Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe GmbH (VBK) is the municipal transport company of the Baden-Württemberg city of Karlsruhe . They operate the tram and bus network and a light rail line on behalf of the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (AVG) .
By consistently expanding the tram network in the period after the Second World War , the Karlsruhe Transport Authority has succeeded in developing a very successful local transport service over the past 50 years. The VBK are 100 percent owned by Karlsruher Versorgungs-, Verkehrs- und Hafen GmbH ( KVVH ), which in turn is 100 percent owned by the City of Karlsruhe.
history
The first forerunner of the transport company was the Karlsruher Straßenbahn-Gesellschaft , founded by AEG in 1894 , which set itself the goal of converting the horse-drawn tramway that had existed since 1877 into an electric tramway .
The importance of the tram for urban development prompted the city of Karlsruhe to acquire the tram operation from AEG in 1903 and to continue to operate it as a municipal operation. Due to the accelerated traffic compared to the horse and steam operation and the expansion of the network, the number of passengers rose rapidly. In 1901, 6.8 million passengers were counted, and by 1912 the number had reached 15.9 million.
After the Second World War , the company, now known as the Städtische Straßenbahngesellschaft Karlsruhe , was renamed the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe, paying tribute to the operation of bus lines and other means of transport.
With the establishment of the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV), a uniform tariff system was set up in 1994 . In 1997 the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe was converted into a GmbH ; previously it was a city-owned company affiliated with the municipal utilities.
In 1996, the VBK already carried 66 million passengers in the tram sector, and another ten million on the city bus routes. Buses and trams now carry over 100 million passengers a year.

Light rail traffic
In addition to the tram lines, VBK also operate the Karlsruhe suburban railway line S2 on behalf of the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft . AVG is the owner of the Rheinstrandsiedlung - Rheinstetten and Sinsheimer Straße - Stutensee sections, but the VBK is responsible for the operation. The S2 tram runs in the city area (Rheinstrandsiedlung <> Reitschulschlag) every 10 minutes during the day. Outside the city area, at least every 20 minutes is offered during the day. Despite its designation with an S , it is only driven to BOStrab . In addition, other AVG tram lines operate in the Karlsruhe tram network based on the Karlsruhe model in cooperation with the Karlsruhe transport company.

Bus transport
As a supplement to tram traffic, the public transport company has been operating bus routes since 1911 , some with their own vehicles and some through subcontractors . The first line between Mühlburg and Daxlanden was opened on December 30, 1911 and only ran for three months due to an excessively high operating deficit. Only in 1926 was another bus service to Rüppurr put into operation, which existed until 1931. The first bus line that still exists today is the connection to the Weiherfeldsiedlung, opened in 1928. Additional bus lines were set up over the next few decades to supplement the tram network. Today the bus network consists of 23 lines that are organized as feeders to the tram and light rail network.

The bus fleet of Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe largely consists of vehicles from the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. Two intercity buses from the manufacturer Setra still function as old stock and are primarily used for rented trips, school trips or on the KIT shuttle. It is planned to replace the two vehicles with new vehicles in 2018. There is a tunnel on bus lines 50 and 51, the "Bulacher Loch", which only has a passage height of 2.7 meters. In 1997, 9 Mercedes-Benz O 405 NKF² vehicles were acquired for this purpose. Since these vehicles did not have air conditioning, new vehicles were sought from 2010. However, Mercedes was not ready to produce a flatter bus based on the Citaro. The only manufacturer was the company MJT from Hungary, which produced a prototype in 2012. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt shortly afterwards, so that one had to look around again for new vehicles. Ultimately, Solaris contacted us with a suitable vehicle. It was created on the basis of the Solaris Urbino 10.9 LE and was built a little flatter and adjusted to a height of 2.7 meters. The air conditioning was installed in the rear of the vehicle so that the bus has no rear window and the last row of seats is missing.

Night lines
On December 14, 2008, an hourly night line network was introduced: local public transport is now available 24 hours a day in the city area. At the central rendezvous point Marktplatz depart at minute 30: two tram lines (S1 / S11 and S2), one tram line (NL1 / NL2, a common circuit of the eastern part of line 1 and a "circle" through the city center), four night bus lines ( NL3 / NL4 / NL5 / NL6) and a collective call taxi (ALT14). Another night bus line (NL6) and three collective call taxis (ALT11, ALT12, ALT13) are waiting at the end of NL1. Since the offer was improved in spring 2009, the night cycle begins at 1:30 a.m. (initially 0:30). The last night clock runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 6:30 a.m. (only on these nights the tram lines S1 / S11 and S2 also go beyond the city area), otherwise at 4:30 a.m. (at the beginning of the 5th : 30). The previous half-hourly night service on weekends has also been replaced by the new hourly service. The S4 and S5 tram lines have not been integrated into the new night network, but continue to operate their previous night service unchanged. After the end of the 2016 summer vacation, continuous night traffic on the nights from Sunday to Monday through Thursday to Friday was largely discontinued, along with a few other savings.
