The GT8-80C is a light rail vehicle that was manufactured by DUEWAG for the Karlsruhe transport company and the Albtal-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft . It was created on the basis of the vehicle type GT6-80C by adding an additional middle section.

construction

The design principle is as in GT6-80C also from the built by DUEWAG high-floor - metropolitan railway -car stadtbahnwagen b derived and corresponds to the GT6-80C. The GT8-80C differs in that it has an additional middle section and a Jakobs bogie . This makes it ten meters longer at 38.41 meters. In the delivery condition, the capacity increased by 24 seats and 33 standing places to 119 seats and 124 standing places in contrast to 94 seats and 91 standing places in the GT6-80C of the third delivery series. The two delivery series differ in their different middle parts. The third delivery series delivered in 1989 received a doorless middle section with roof edge glazing (panorama compartment), air conditioning and carpeting. The fourth delivery series was given a middle section with a door in order to facilitate faster passenger changes. The roof edge glazing and air conditioning were omitted in this delivery series.

history

delivery

The first series, delivered in 1989, consisted of five vehicles with roof edge glazing and was primarily intended for use on the Alb Valley Railway and the Busenbach – Ittersbach railway line . Air conditioning, roof edge glazing, 2 + 1 seating with wider seats and carpeting in the middle section should provide additional comfort, especially for passengers who travel longer distances. The second series, also made up of five vehicles, was created in 1990 from the GT6-80C 586-590 by inserting a middle section, also with roof edge glazing. Due to their special window construction, these vehicles are also called panorama cars in Karlsruhe .

All other vehicles were delivered with a fifth door in the middle section without panoramic glazing and air conditioning, since in use it became apparent that the passengers were very unevenly distributed in the vehicle. Ten newly built vehicles from DUEWAG followed in 1991, while in 1993 and 1997 ten vehicles each were added by converting GT6-80C. The middle parts were also supplied by DUEWAG, the installation took place in the main workshop of VBK.

commitment

Double traction from GT8-80C and GT6-80C on the Karlsruhe market square

The vehicles were used from the beginning by AVG on tram line A (Albtalbahn, Hardtbahn) and since 1991 also on tram line 2 of the Karlsruhe transport company. Since the line network change in 1997, they have been running on lines S1, S11 and S2. It is used both individually and in multiple units . The latter both with each other and with the six-axle GT6-80C. While the vehicles with roof edge glazing were only used on line A or S1 / S11 in their first years of operation, they are now used on all lines. Since mid-July 2017, the vehicles have been gradually being replaced by those of the NET2012 type. Since the beginning of 2019, the vehicles have only made very few or no laps on Sundays.
