The Fächerbad is a bathing complex consisting of indoor and outdoor pools as well as a sauna in the “ Traugott-Bender-Sportpark ” in Karlsruhe's Waldstadt , which was inaugurated in 1982. It was the venue for the 100th German Swimming Championships in 1988 and the World Games in 1989 in the sports of fin swimming and lifeguarding .

history

In 1969, the Karlsruhe swimming club Neptun (KSN) and SSC Waldstadt reached an eight-point agreement in 1899 "to promote the construction of a joint sports and swimming center". The city of Karlsruhe had already reserved a site for this. However, other Karlsruhe municipalities such as Durlach had older rights and were given preference. In 1974, Walther Wäldele, head of the sports and swimming pool, invited various decision-makers to an information trip to Würzburg, and the concept convinced all participants. After a lot of organizational preparations, the pool was opened on April 28, 1982.

In the following year the 250,000th and 1985 the millionth visitor was counted. Despite the high number of visitors and municipal subsidies, the funds were insufficient, so that in 2009 the municipal holding company KVVH took over the company shares . In 2018 the total number of visitors was over 13 million.

Swimming pool and outdoor facilities

In the swimming pool there is a 50-meter lap pool, a 25-meter lap pool, a diving pool and a children's pool. There is also an outdoor pool with three massage jets as well as a particularly warm paddling pool, a course pool and a cafeteria. Outside the pool there is a sunbathing lawn with a children's playground, as well as three beach volleyball fields and a small soccer field.

From 2009, investments were made in a new 25-meter convertible pool, a course pool for aqua fitness, new changing rooms and new technology.

Sporting events

Country comparison battles took place in 1983 and 1984. The outstanding event was the 100th German Swimming Championships from July 19 to 24, 1988 . For this purpose, a ten-meter-high spectator stand was set up above the diving pool. A European record and several German records were swum.

The international highlight was the 1989 World Games with the sports of fin swimming and lifeguard swimming. Prince Albert II of Monaco was present as a guest of honor.

The International Swimming Days Karlsruhe (ISTKA) take place regularly in the fan pool. The SSC Karlsruhe organized swimming for a good cause, the German Masters Championship "short distance" 2019 and the German Masters Championships in swimming and synchronized swimming from May 31 to June 2, 2019.
