The Karlsruhe City Archive is the archive of the city of Karlsruhe . Organizationally, it is part of the City Archives & Historical Museums department of the city's cultural office.

history

The Karlsruhe City Archives were founded on July 10, 1885. The establishment of a city archives commission was preceded on June 22 of the same year. The oldest urban cultural institution was initially housed in the town hall. The local population handed over numerous historical documents to the establishment of the new facility. The management of the archive was taken over on a voluntary basis by proven experts.

In 1896 the archive moved into a converted building in the south-west of the city , which previously housed a waterworks. The neighboring square was named Archive Square as a result of the move . In the same year an archive secretary was hired, the first full-time archive manager was appointed in 1912.

At the beginning of the 1920s, the archive had to give way to the expansion of the Karlsruhe employment office and subsequently changed location several times. In 1923 the city archives were initially housed in Kaiserstraße 141. In 1929 the company moved to Zähringerstraße 100, only two years later, in 1931, to Karl-Friedrich-Straße 21. In 1939 the archive was set up at Schützenstraße 16.

During the Second World War , the inventory had to be relocated, but the office was kept on site. After the war, the city archive was initially located in the Solms house at Bismarckstrasse 24. In 1959, the company moved to the old savings bank building on the market square .

In the 1980s, the tasks and holdings of the city archive increased so much that new suitable rooms had to be created. Therefore, in September 1990, the city archives moved into the former pawn shop at Markgrafenstrasse 29, which had been converted for archival purposes. As a new store and space for new office space was needed, the premises were converted in April 2013. In the one-year construction period, the city archives building was two stories topped with a barrel roof provided.

tasks

The central task of the city archive is the archiving of all documents important to the city's history, including photos, plans, films and sound recordings, newspapers, books and company or private documents. In addition, the city archive offers access to and advice on the archival material and conducts research itself, which regularly results in exhibitions and publications.

After documents have been handed over to the city archive by the city administration, the population, companies or from other sources, they are checked for archivability. Documents that are not considered worthy of archiving are destroyed or returned, while documents considered worthy of archiving are stored and, in some cases, digitized and then made available in the reading room of the city archive.

Friends of Karlsruhe City History

The Friends of Karlsruhe City History enables citizens to participate and aims, among other things, to arouse interest in the history of Karlsruhe, to bring the city's history closer to the population and to contribute to supplementing the collections through donations. The laying of the stumbling blocks in Karlsruhe, for example, is coordinated by a working group of the friends' association.
