The Traugott-Bender-Sportpark is a sports facility in the Waldstadt district of the City of Karlsruhe with a sports and family pool , cricket facility, fitness and health center, tennis facilities and beach volleyball fields. It has been named since 1979 after Traugott Bender , co-founder of the SSC Karlsruhe and former Minister of Justice of Baden-Württemberg .

The area covers 60,000 m², on which there are three grass playing fields and an artificial turf pitch. The main playing field is surrounded by standing walls that provide space for around 9,400 spectators, including benches for around 600 spectators.

history

Sports facilities were initially not taken into account in the planning of the Waldstadt, which will be built in 1957. In 1959, the German Sports Association launched the “Second Way” action program, which corresponded to the basic idea of “Sport for everyone”, that is, a broader population's need for relaxation, play and sport. In 1960 the German Olympic Society decided on the "Golden Plan" for sport in Karlsruhe City Hall.

With the founding of FC Waldstadt in 1962 and SSC-Waldstadt in 1967, the search for sports areas began. In 1970, the development plan for the sports center to be built on the site was approved, and in 1971 the SSC Karlsruhe began building its sports facilities with the construction of four tennis courts.

In the following years, the sports clubs completed further sports facilities, such as the SSC a sports and meeting center and the Spielweg recreational sports facility, which was open to all citizens and equipped with exercise stations , large play equipment and a roller sports field . In 1982 the fan pool was opened. The Karlsruhe Ski Club with its tennis home and several tennis courts has been located in the west of the site since 1982. The Karlsruhe section of the German Alpine Club opened a climbing hall in 2003 .

On December 3, 2001, the clubs and institutions based on the site merged to form the Traugott-Bender-Sportpark working group. In addition to the above, these are the Karlsruhe sports and gymnastics school, a vocational college for the training of sports and gymnastics teachers and the Karlsruhe gymnastics region, which has been represented with its training center Rudi-Seiter-Turnzentrum since 2007. The House of Sports of the Badischer Sportbund has been located in the east of the site since 2001 . At the beginning of 2012, the Wirbelwind sports daycare center was opened, which works together with the SSC.
